No AA filter would be cool, but that is a hell lot of megapixel on a ff.

Why would any photographer want to mess with 53MP files. I heard a ton of complaints from the Nikon guys about the 38MP files.

Landscapes. Large prints. Heavy cropping - at 53MP, you can crop down to 1.5x size and still have 23MP, which is great for wildlife.

As it is, I often stitch 36MP images using a tilt-shift lens, giving me a 60MP image with an effective 20x60mm sensor area, or use rotational stitching for even greater resolution.

Yup. I've had a lot of opportunity to work with the D800/e/810. I'm not Nikon basing here. They are great cameras but the huge file size just doesn't fit my workflow very well. I can print poster size with my 5D3 files on the very rare occasion that I want to quite nicely. I find this new megapixel war a little unfortunate.

If it's anything like my 7D2 (and shy would it not be?), I'm sure you will have several options with regard to the size of the RAW files. You won't have to use all 50+ unless you want.

Cropping on that baby would be insane!

My 7D2 does not require cropping. You can choose to shoot on of several sizes of JPEG or RAW files (or both). No cropping involved, just fewer megapixels being used to start with.

No cropping? When I shot birds with my 7D @ 500mm I always had to crop to really fill the frame with the bird.

while I am excited to see what comes out, as a hobbist it's not MPX that I want more. In fact I am happy with the 6D apart from the AF points.

Without being a crazy guy for pixels, i am happy to see that Canon are coming with something refreshing.
Now, how is it going to fit on a 24x36 sensor format, that is two times more than the 5D3.
The AA filter will be gone , so they say.
We will have to wait and see, that is if it comes out.
But CR3 on the canon rumors is looking good.

Sorry if I misunderstood. I was referring to being able to lower the MPX count, not cropping the frame for best composition.

I especially like the comments about it being supposed to have better colour rendition - just hope they've improved the DR too, I HATE merging exposures and HDR

Also, what is the naming convention about? Why not just Mark IV? What is the significance of the "s" or the "R"?

I'm a landscape and architectural photographer, and the last 'great' camera for us was the 1Ds mk3. If you had one of those then the gains from upgrading to any of the 5d's hasn't been enough to make it worth spending the cash IMHO. My customers rarely print smaller than A2 so you just need the resolution, it's that simple. My customers like a pretty picture but its a more technically based field so they tend to lean in and you just have to have the fine detail, think A2 viewed like a 10x8. The 1ds3 is amazing, even more so for it's time as it was released in August 2007 and it is still my go to camera. However you shoot it at ISO 100 as it gets noisy in the shadows fast, but it's over 7 years old so you live with that as it does an amazing job for what it is.

This hopefully is the camera we have been waiting for, waiting a long time for. If it is half as good as the 1ds3 was compared to the rest of the cameras on offer back in 2007 I will be grinning like a loon. I just hope that the price point isn't too painful.

Those who don't like the many pixels can always get the 5D Mark IV, which is supposed to come out in August and have about 24 MP. Only a rumor so far, but so are the 5DS and 5DS R.
