P. The extra reach helps but it always depends on the situation. Like most lenses, how you work with it will impact image quality the most.

P. I think it's about finding the right location. Here's one location that is about an hour's drive from my house. I found it because someone here on POTN talked about it.  Early Morning Shooting by dan@dgrphotos.com, on FlickrYou can see all the eagles in the trees across the river. I don't have to try to get closer, just have to wait for them to start hunting. Another popular location is lock and dam 14 on the Mississippi. That is about a 2 hour drive for me but it's one of the more popular places in the US to get a photo of an eagle during the winter. People come in from all over the US to shoot there. Here's a short video of Lock and Dam 14. http://youtu.be/uFRXxrSa1rE If you go out on the trails cover yourself from head to toe in camo. You'd be surprised how close you can get to birds when dressed right.

This is one of the few affordable (for me) nikon lenses with any length. I'm also debating the Sigma and Tamron 150-600 lenses. Paul
