Located in the southwestern corner of the South Island of New Zealand, Fiordland is a rather remote but spectacular area of tall mountains, deep lakes, green forests, and gushing waterfalls. We drove down to Te Anau for a few days a couple of weeks ago.

Milford Sound is one of the key attractions in Fiordland, about a 2-hour drive from Te Anau.

1. Just the drive up from Te Anau on the Milford Highway is worthwhile. The soaring cliffs and waterfalls crashing down from them are awe-inspiring.

2. Arguably the best driving road in the world?

3. While I'm not a big fan of organized tours, a cruise on the Milford Sound was awesome. We did the cruise right after a rainy day, and so got to see a lot of waterfalls (which normally don't "run" when it's dry).

4. Milford Sound at twilight. Make sure to pack a lot of insect repellent, because the sand flies are unbelievably irritating.

5. Tons of alpine lupins were in bloom.

6. We hiked the Key Summit Track. The low clouds on the way up were quite unreal -- looked almost fake, as if someone had turned down the blinds.

7. But as the clouds burned off, the views over Hollyford Valley were magical.

8. The walk on the Kepler Track was fantastic, complete with swinging bridges through dense beech and fern forests.

Beautiful set. You really had nice weather/clouds. I really must get back down to the South Island before I'm too old to fly.

Very nice set. My favorites were the second one as the car gives scale, and the last one as it shows to me at least that it's not always easy to get the shot and they are not always on the side of the road.

Without ever having been there, or anywhere close, I can now say with certainty that New Zealand must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Amazing beauty in your images.

Thanks. Yes, forgot to mention that Fiordland gets a LOT of rain. 8m (26ft) per year. So we definitely lucked out on the weather front.

One thing I like about living in NZ (moved here about 9 months ago) is that not only can you easily get away from the crowds, but you can also pull over on the side of the road almost anywhere and shoot -- at least here in the South Island, no restricted highways and tons of restricted stopping/parking areas.

It truly is spectacular. Many other countries do have similar great scenery, but NZ has it all packed in a relatively small place + very few crowds. The only thing missing is the desert (southern Utah is one of my favourite places).

Thank you. If you love the outdoors and solitude, NZ is a must-visit. On the downside, it takes a decent amount of time and money to visit.

Fantastic set. Fiordland looks like a paradise.

I lived in Colorado for 10 years (6 of them in a ski town), but the mountains of NZ still continue to impress me. And the ones in Fiordland are truly spectacular even for NZ. The sheer faces rising out from the waters, covered in lush forests -- just something else. The drive between Te Anau and Milford was dangerous simply because one tends to look at scenery more than the narrow winding road!

Thanks. NZ is a landscape photographer's paradise. I was never into landscapes much, until after I moved here.

Fiordland is one of my favourite places in NZ. You are making me miss home!
Nice shots, only viewed them on my phone but will make sure to check them out on a bigger screen later.

(If anyone is a scuba diver and in NZ definitely dive in Milford sound. It is incredible)

Thanks. For 8, I did do a version with the end in focus, but I liked this one better -- with the end blurred, it gives it a sense of...mystery...endlessness...the eye just continues and gets lost in the greenery. In the other version (below), my eyes stop at the end:

Thanks. When driving to Fiordland, it doesn't seem like it will be that much different than the rest of the Southern Alps. But it is a very different type of landscape indeed. And worth the extra time and effort to drive and walk. I've heard of great diving on the West Coast -- seems it would be pretty cold though! Would have liked to have gone kayaking, but just didn't have time for that.
