Ring neck Pheasant I shot at work today, Head is a little fuzzy to me, I think shutter needs to be faster for the head-bob.

Yeah, having a longer lens, often doesn't mean you can be much further away.
It's still best to get as close as possible.

Sometimes it's almost impossible to get closer because of being spooked easily, or physical barriers.

I've been trying to capture a Belted King Fisher up close, but they often don't even let you get within 30 meters or so.
In those cases, you just have to wait and hope it lands nearby, or be in a hide/wearing camo, ect.

Uhm.. really, really blurred. Not only the head but the body and the environment too.
it does not seem motion blur.
1/400 should not be a problem with a decent IS (if the subject is still, of course).

Not sure what the problem was. DPP says the focus point was on the white ring on his neck. Kinda breezy tho and hand held, probably user error. That was cropped 30% or so and resized so that didnt help things.

If the registration with the scene/subject jumps, the reported focus point is over a different part of the scene than when the camera assumed focus was achieved. A lot of milliseconds pass from that time until the actual exposure.

Indeed, but my question is actually: what are the final posted pictures crop ratios with respect to the original APS-C sensor size ?
