A few from my last couple games. Some strobed, some ambient. Have a preference?

Great job to all of you on these shots. I shot my first BB of the season last Friday night in a gym that has yellow walls and my WB was all over the place. I noticed that your's is spot on and consistent. What are you doing to set your WB?

First off you need to do a custom white balance. You can use a white piece of paper or a grey card. I have an Expo Disc. A device that snaps over your lens, and you take a picture to set your white balance. Also I shoot RAW, so I can tweek the images if necessary.

Looking at your images they look very underexposed. What is your ISO set at?

Thanks for the input. I was looking into the Expodisc.

I later switched to 3200 ISO and 1000 shutter speed.

The most often used settings I have seen for high school basketball are: ISO 6400 f/2.8 and 1/640. That is with cameras not in the same league as a 1Dx. Push the ISO until the exposure is correct and SS is at least 1/640 sec.

All the yellow and what appears to be a dark/orange floor can be a problem with WB. AWB might not correct enough under those conditions. There is an arena in our area that has two types of lights, a dark floor and purple lane. WB is a nightmare there.

I shot all of these with a Sony a6000 and a 50mm f/1.8 OSS. Hard to believe this little $600 camera/lens combo can do what it does. It was nice leaving the 5D III and the 70-200 in the bag. I must say the files are very close and I love the 11fps.

The first three pics are of Jaylen Fisher (ESPN 2016 #33 player in the country) He is a shooting guard playing for Bolton High. The others are from the game and a couple from the Friday night game.

I agree with Craig. With the 1DX don't be afraid to push the ISO. I shot my son's basketball game last night. I was at 10,000 ISO. Probably could have pushed it to 12,000. I have the 5D3. With basketball I shoot boys at 1/800. But will go down to 1/640 if they are younger. I will also shoot girls at 1/640. It looks like the lights in your shots are cycling. So that only think where you may be able to tweak some of your shots is by shooting RAW, and making adjustments.

Set your Camera to these settings and you'll most likely be 98% spot on.....
Set your Camera to Manual
Set your ISO to 6400
Set your Shutter Speed to 1/640
Set your Lens Aperture to f/2.8
Set your White Balance to "Custom Color Temperature" (that's the square with the letter "K" in the middle) and physically change the Color Temperature to 4200k

From this point on, the only thing that you really might have to change is the Shutter Speed (maybe to 1/500 underneath the goal due to lower light and possibly up to 1/800 in the middle of the open court due to brighter light... but 1/640 should be fine) and you may have to change the Custom Color Temperature (4200k is a good starting point, but it could possibly go as high as 4500k)

Good Luck and post us the results with some new shots!!!

Not sure who you are directing that question to but here is what I do.

I shoot RAW and edit in LR5. I set a custom white balance at the game and I might tweak the it somewhat depending on how it looks.

The following are just estimates but they are good starting points for me.
Clarity +10
Vibrance +21
Saturation +3-5

The colors on the uniforms all get a +15, red, blue, green etc....

Sharpening around 45-50, masking +20
Noise depends on if I use strobes or not. These were around 50
Check the profile correction button and that is it.

Thanks to both of you. What a tremendous wealth of information. I will apply what you have shared and post once I get to shoot another game.

Here is one using the settings and edits recommended earlier. Lowered the ISO a little for exposure. Thoughts?
