Considering SIGMA has had a full frame 12-24mm since oh, 2005 or so, I fail to see how this lens could require such a high price. Obviously this will be much better, all optical designs have progressed and improved, and it's Canon, but $3K worth? It just does not fit Canons pricing at all.

It does behoove Canon to have an 11-24L, and the idea of it being f/4 is compelling. I have the 2nd generation Sigma 12-24mm, and it is a very nice lens. It's great at car events when you want to isolate a car, or if you want to get a nice interior shot. At 12mm, it's also a fun lens for fashion. Ask Lindsay Adler!

When I bought the Sigma, I was looking at wide angle lenses from Canon. They didn't have anything like the Sigma. The Sigma was exactly what I wanted, and had quite good reviews. I got it and have never regretted the purchase. Current price at both B&H and Adorama is $950. The Sigma is 12-24mm; the rumored Canon is 11-24mm. The Sigma is f/4.5-5.6; the rumored Canon is f/4. Are 1mm, one stop, and one red ring worth an extra $2K? Canon has a strong competitor in the Sigma lens. Is $3K a viable price point?

I alway thought the idea was that the 11-24 would be f2.8 wihtout IS
now it is f4 without IS
i am trying to get my head around the idea of the utility of a f4 16-35 IS and a parallel 11-24
granted there is a difference between 11 and 16mm
but there is a REALLY huge difference in a $3k price point and the 5mm gain/IS loss.

I was at one time more interested in the lens than I am now, TBH.
I will be excited to see the images from it....
but not sure it will be on my "short list".

That's what I'd have thought too, but it's been very useful shooting at small apertures in relatively low light when I don't have a tripod handy. I'm kind of disappointed that the new 11-24 is apparently not going to have IS.

Glad they included the rear gel holder. I was wondering how I'd get a filter on the front of that thing! :p

Rear gel holder? :D_ Guess downside is only one gel at a time? What about grad gels? Do those exist?

at just under 2 1/2 pounds and 4 aspherical elements this is going to be some lens. so the question i have is whether or not there will be vignetting on a full frame such as the 8-15 fisheye does.

Apparently you can add multiple if it is the same as the 17-40L. To this day I still haven't been able to find anybody online that actually uses the gel filter holder on the 17-40L though.
