If the T6s has a Sony sensor (like the a6000), it suddenly becomes one of the most compelling cameras in Canon's lineup.

Can't wait to compare the 5DsR to the D810. Almost bit on a D810 the other day.

''newly designed Canon 50.6 megapixel full-frame CMOS image sensor''

Looks like everyone's hopes for a Sony sensor did not come to fruition. Their new sensor must match or go beyond the DR offered by Sony sensors or these cameras will be a disappointment.

The Japanese website makes it sound like they have used a smaller fabrication process so there's definitely hope for this sensor.

My 5D3 is looking like one of the better investments i have made in a camera. Unless there is dramatic improvements with this anticipated 5D4. Im staying put

Canon needs to improve darks and shadows on its sensors. It does n0t need a 50MP camera. some maybe, but the majority dont need or want it.

and final thoughts

3K for a F/4 super wide angle..........are they on Fricken drugs. WTF

my 7D2 got a 17-55 and a Tokina 11-16 F/2.8. Really disappointed with that lens price points.........no thanks

my 17-35 is 10 yrs old but i sure wont be stepping up to this thing. 16-35 F/4 is the way i will go plus it has IS

Dear Canon: please announce the 5D4 specs. If you dont improve the Darks and shadows on the camera sensors, Nikon may get my business. Cant believe i said that. been using canon since 1974

My guess is that it will neither match nor go beyond "the DR offered by Sony sensors" at base ISO. As is typical of Canon sensors, they will out-do Sony sensors at higher ISO values yet will get no credit from the "only Sony sensors are any good" crowd. Even if these new sensors do match Sony sensors for that particular number (DR at base ISO) there's bound to be some other number, somewhere (my bet: DXO) where a Sony sensor can be said to be better, and once that's hunted down then the "all Canon sensors are all cr*p, all the time" refrain can continue on the basis of whatever number that may be.

I have no particular brief for or against Sony sensors or Canon sensors. But I can note that one might be superior in some circumstances while another might be superior in different circumstances. I'm suggesting that if and only if you are doing critical work that requires utmost performance at that particular task then you should perhaps care about this. Otherwise most modern sensors will mostly do whatever you want once you've learned to work with them. But it won't matter: people will look for one number - any number - to justify their pre-judgement for their favourite and against all others.

I might wish it wasn't so, but it is. I suppose it keeps the forums ticking over, but it's starting to get very old...

I cranked the Blacks and Shadows on the ISO 800 image up to +100 each and everything still looked fantastic.

I'm probably the most vocal anti-old-sensor person on POTN but I suddenly have a lot of hope that Canon knows what its doing.

Despite some rumors to the contrary, Westfall said the 50.6MP CMOS sensors in the 5DS and 5DS R are developed and produced by Canon. When asked whether they were created in collaboration with Sony as some rumors indicated, Westfall responded by saying: “Absolutely not. The sensors were developed completely in-house, by Canon.”

A local store here in Brisbane has posted a cryptic message on their Facebook page alluding the the fact the have this new gear in store for a demo today (it's Friday morning here already)

These new gears might be hitting the shelves very soon.

I went along, and they had the new 5DS(R) (or however they call it) there for handling - no battery and no cards allowed.

Looks and feels like a 5D3.

Expected pricing is AUD4,699 for the 5DS and AUD4,999 for the R version. Given current ratios, expect the USD price to be a little less than that.

[EDIT] I see the US prices are significantly lower than the Australian prices. Looks like we are going back to the bad old days for exhorbitant camera pricing in Australia . . .

Cheers, Damien

I don't really care since I don't shoot Canon anymore. 50mp??? So, your raw file would be about 60mb in size. :)

Playing with the sample jpegs and pushing it 1-5 stops, I see no visible banding anywhere! Cant wait to see the raws. If they fixed the banding this will keep me with Canon!
