I remember when everyone hated working with 10 mp files. bring it on, I say

the jpgs on the canon website are 22mpx in size. eek. no way those can be uploaded to cloud in a hurry while out and about. I hate to see what the raw file sizes are.

It doesn't really work like this. If there is an improvement with a good lens, there is an improvement in resolution with any lens. You might be able to see some issues (e.g. softness of corners, etc.) when looking at 100% but you'd still gain resolution over the entire frame.

The claim that you "need" better lenses wit higher resolution is incorrect. You might decide you want a better lens for a certain magnification, but I've seen zero examples where, comparing at the same magnification, a higher resolution (but otherwise at least equal or better) camera was worse than a lower resolution camera (at low ISO).

BTW that lens would probably be great for anyone using it for landscapes, but althoguh I like the FL, unfortunately it would be useless to me and I guess some others because of the f/4 aperture.

The 7D2 has an even higher pixel density than the 5Ds, and the lenses I tried on it, even the older ones like the 85/1.8 or 400/5.6 are just fine. So I don't think you need to worry.

While there seems to be no banding in the blacks, picture of a woman in a garden with an owl, there is certainly noise there and very much similar in characteristic to 5DIII and 1Dx. I am guessing at this point of course but presume shadow pulling will be as with older models (better done with curves than with a shadow slider in LR (unless Adobe implements something better)). That said as a studio/landscape camera with a T&S stuck on it, count me interested.

7D Mark II has 20.2 million effective pixels, and the 5DS has in 1.6 crop mode approximately 20 million pixels. At least they are very close to each other, which make me wonder if they share the same sensor technology. Could it be so?

Maybe the EXMOR will be for the EOS M3 (24Mp)

I went along, and they had the new 5DS(R) (or however they call it) there for handling - no battery and no cards allowed.

Looks and feels like a 5D3.

Expected pricing is AUD4,699 for the 5DS and AUD4,999 for the R version. Given current ratios, expect the USD price to be a little less than that.

[EDIT] I see the US prices are significantly lower than the Australian prices. Looks like we are going back to the bad old days for exhorbitant camera pricing in Australia . . .

The price is pretty good considering the strong USD at the moment. You wouldn't be able to land it cheaper buying from B&H even if you avoided the GST on arrival, factoring that in we're getting a pretty good deal.

I thought about going for a look but got sidetracked. Would have nice to get a couple of raw files to play with but seems there was no chance of that happening.

That would be disappointing of the read noise is still the same as the 5dIII. Canon actually made some improvements in the A/D conversion with the 7dII- if that continued on this larger sensor they probably could have gotten close to DR range from Nikon/Sony.

I saw it coming from miles away. Same old sh*t. Canon cannot get me excited anymore. Sony on the other hand...

Well, it's about damn time Canon! Lol! If the DR is improved it will be a no-brainer for me!! The 11-24 is sweet too!

I read that. I hope it isn't true but, now that Canon has swung back, it's still early in the year for Nikon & Sony to release something new.
