I realize this is not a big issue ($10 or less), but I want some feedback to hear your thoughts.

I recently bought a Canon lens on Ebay and received the lens cap shown below.

The listing indicated that the lens, UV filter and lens caps were included. A picture of the front cap was included, but not one of the back cap.

(Yes, I realize it is my fault for not specifically asking if the lens caps were genuine, but based on the answer below, that may not have mattered.)

The lens seems okay, but I informed the seller that I was disappointed upon receiving a non Canon lens cap. (I would not sell a lens with a non Canon cap without disclosing that fact.)

The Seller's initial reply was that it was an original lens cap and it says Cannon right on it. Yes, Cannon.

I indicated that the lens cap was a knockoff and sent pictures to show what I received.

The answer I got was that the seller was within his Ebay rights and if I wanted a lens cap to send him the one I have and he will send another one to me.

The answers are leaving me less than convinced of the seller.

So, should I send him his lens cap back and get him to send a correct lens cap? (After I have confirmed he will send a Canon lens cap?)

Leave neutral or worse feedback.

Return the lens and file a complaint?

File a complaint and sort it out?

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

For a lens cap it seems like a return would be a waste of time and resources as you are likely responsible for return shipping charges. I mean, it's a lens cap after all. I've happily bought lenses without any caps when the deal was good. You created a thread earlier to help you determine if the cap was original so one could well imagine that the seller believed it genuine. Much ado about nothing really. You could leave a neg for the seller but it seems a little picky if you are happy with the lens otherwise.

Yeah, I'd file that under "don't sweat the small stuff" and just let it go.

Let it go. It's a lens cap. Seller may have intentionally not revealed that it was a generic cap, but if you are going to be so concerned about it you really need to be careful about what you are buying. It doesn't sound like his ad was misleading or untruthful in any way. I would not leave even neutral feedback in this case. Seems wrong unless you can prove the facts were misrepresented.

Send the knockoff lens cap back. Wait with feedback until you receive the replacement.

Did the seller buy the lens new, or are they a reseller? Just wondering if they wouldn't know the difference anyway. Doesn't sound like they are being dishonest.

JDCPA,

I would not worry about it, unless the lens cap does not fit or stay on. If it works, then it is doing just as good of a job as a Canon rear lens cap. Functionally, they should be the same.

Cheers,
Bryan

Thanks.

I have had some time to cool down.

The more I talked to the seller, the sketchier the answers got.

I am going to return the rear lens cap, just to have a correct one.

If I were the seller I would immediately hop on Amazon and have a new cap sent directly to the buyer with 2-day shipping.

I think it is silly to inconvienance the buyer and have them send the old cap back for a replacement.

If I were the seller I'd ask the buyer are you serious. What is a GENUINE Canon cap going to do
any better than a generic cap? I would really like to hear some replies to this question.

Wow, really? Over a lens cap? All the more reason not to sell on Ebay when folks are going to complain about something like this. What is it some collectable vintage lens or something? Dang......

Totally agree. This is silliness. It's a lens cap.

Make sure you have a spare rear lens cap before doing this or else you will end up with bigger problems.
