I didn't find much kids playing soccer here, but enough fantastic BIF shots to suggest what I am doing wrong. Shutter speeds over 1/1000 and stopped down just enough to get the best out of his 70-300L. I am framing quite loosely, in order to get in some of the environment and the other players. If I crop heavily to single out my grandson, the IQ goes down accordingly. I think I'll try deploying my 100-400L before considering another body.

What kind of shutter speeds are you using?
I also suggest going to

and do a search for 60d action photos and even 60d photos in general. I'm not saying there aren't better sports cameras out there, but I've seen some excellent action photos taken with the 60d. I myself have taken nice action shots with the 60d/ tamron 70-300vc combo. When I get a chance, I can upload some photos. I'm away at the time being.
I went back to LR and looked at the shutter speeds. Most were 1/1000+. I think focal length is my bigger problem. It is going to be about six weeks before any springtime athletics start up. Indiana is still under a nice (yucxk!) blanket of snow. Thanks. (For the help. I know the snow isn't your fault.)
