They are loaded into the camera. The technique, basically, is to arrive at a situation where every setting (including custom functions) is correct for the shooting "job", and then save that "set of settings" on one of the memory cards as a CSD file. You can have eight (I think) different such "sets" on a card, all named, and, of course multiple cards. I use small slow, 2GB SD cards for this task.
You can then load any of those saved "sets" when you have that "job" to do in the future.
If someone else has such a "set", and saved it as a CSD file, then you can use it in the same way.
My collection grew to 17 different "sets" for the 1D3, of which about 3 are my developments, and the rest gleaned from others, mostly from this forum.

This process is explained in the manual, and is used by many organizations and pro shooters. I understand SI is one of them.

NB: Before you load any "set" save your current settings on a card (I named mine DN_BASIC), so you can back to your starting point by reloading it in the future.

Here's the Dropbox link again to the 1D3 collection:

I also have some for my current camera, a 1D4. They are not model interchangeable with the 1D3, so don't try to mix and match, but if you need them, here they are:

Yes, I don't have a 1Ds and a 1Dx but I have the rest. You can have some of the best cameras ever made for 10 cents on the dollar a lot of times.
My 1D had less than 8000 clicks when I got it. It looks brand new. Who buys a $7000 camera in 2001 and puts 8000 clicks on it?
All of them averaged less than 50,000 when I got them.

I just bought a Nikon D2x with 3000 on it. It also looks brand new. ;-)a

I finally got to spend a few minutes outside this afternoon with it, before I became a popsicle. The photos are wonderful and PP is a breeze. I can't wait until I thaw out and get to shoot some more.
