I don't see one of these threads yet so I'm going to start one.

Shot my first college baseball game of the season Saturday afternoon.

All of these were shot with a Canon 70-200 F2/8 IS I + Canon 2X extender III

So exactly how many shot do you take during a baseball game. And how many of those are actually do you say are "good shots". I was just wondering, I will be shooting my first baseball game this season and just wondering.

Well, I took over 400+ shots during the day but ended up putting up just 70 on my Zenfolio website. But, not all the rejects were just plain bad. Some of them, I just chose not to use and there were a lot of shots taken trying to time it to get bat on ball shots. I'm rusty because my timing sucked. :)

There were shots that were usable that I chose not to use.

And then there were some that I missed the focus, misframed the shot trying to get on it quickly, the umpire or another player got in the way or took a shot of something that just didn't work for me And then there were the 6 shots I took of the ground when I bumped the shutter release on the battery grip on my leg. :)

Interesting, I'm shooting my first baseball/softball games this year at a pretty big school and I'm trying to get images for my portfolio. I want to do a good job and really get good images and was wondering. Your shots are impressive and well done... Is there a spot you prefer to shoot from?

Thanks for the info....

Well, that depends. It depends on the lenses you will be using and what shots you are trying to get. Also, what type of on field access you might have.

With the school I am shooting for, McNeese State University, I have pretty liberal on field access. And I do move around between innings. There is small area on just outside the dugout near home plate that is protected by a small fence next to the on deck circle on both sides of the fields. With just my 70-200 I'll take some shots of the pitcher throwing and the batters batting. Left side for right hand pitchers and and left hand batters. The other side of the opposite. You can get some infield plays from there but on the right side the batter running down the line gets in the way.

I will get on the sideline just past the dugouts on both sides using my 70-200 with the 2X extender to get infield plays and down the line a little for outfield plays. I like the right side better because you can get plays at second better such as double plays and steals. Also, you can slide down the line a little and get pickoff plays.

Sometimes between innings I will slide behind the play to get some straight on shots of the pitchers warming up.

I have shot some through the screen behind home plate some but didn't this last game.

Very impressed with these from the 7dmk II/ 70-200 combo. Do you have the mk I or mkII version of the 70-200 f2.8? I have been thinking about adding the 7d mkII just because of the crop factor and extra reach along side my 1Dx.

I have the older Mk I version of the 70-200.

First week with my new glass - Canon 100-400mm with image stabilization (first ever IS lens). I've been shooting baseball since the kid was 6 (last two images are him, then and now - they get bigger and less cute) but this is the first year of college baseball. I'm looking to learn different angles and get better at shooting in the field action.

Hill College (Texas JuCo baseball).

I've got another month yet before baseball starts here, and even then I'm still liable to have snow in the photos!

Thanks klswenson and doc - Just a dad using photography to keep my mouth shut during games. I don't know any of the kids from Hill last year, my son is a freshman and getting his first taste of college ball. JuCo is a tough grind because there are no practice time limit rules like D1 4 year schools...

tennfan1125 - Just a note - All my shots are from behind netting. It would be better to have field access (not possible for dads), but you can get some good shots through the backstop if that's your only option. -Bill

I typically take 400-500 per game.
I might keep 40-50. It really depends on the day and what plays happened when I'm in the right position to get the shot.
