They are a little darker than I wanted.

Very cool. More air than I ever dared in all my years of skiing. Brave kids.

To get your camera to automatically give you the proper exposure you'll need to push your auto exposure comp. There is so much white in the snow that it wants to not over expose everything so you get much darker photos than you expect.

next time, try and capture them against the sky rather than those dark trees. Certainly a moment to remember!

This is exactly right. I would start at +1, and plan on maybe pushing it up from there. You will want some detail in the snow, but if you blow it out ever so slightly, that may lead to better exposure of your subject. The histogram is your friend, but I rely on the blinking highlight warning on the lcd screen as well. I'm ok with some blinking on the snow areas.

Composition will help too- as noted, try to frame against the sky, or more snow. When you get the dark trees and the white snow in the same frame, the camera struggles with that kind of range of brightness. Unless you want to spend some time working on in in post, try to keep the scene more consistent in terms of dynamic range.

And keep your hands warm!

Why not put it in manual and use the sunny 16 rule?

I like the kids framed against the trees because they appear brighter, than if they were against the sky.

Thanks for the tips, I should beable to capture the sky or more snow if I'm on the other side of the jump.
I'll give this a try the next time we go out skiing.

Manual works too- as long as the conditions are consistent. Clouds can ruin your day if they come and go.
