Is there a way to make this disappear from certain threads?

Just curious as to why you'd want to remove it from specific threads.

One example:

I frequent the Lens Sample Photo Archives often to see photos taken with lenses I own or would like to own. I check for the "go to first unread" to quickly find which threads I've been in.
I accidentally clicked on a certain thread recently and I'm not interested in the lens. When I check the "go to first unread" area, this accidental thread is usually near the top and it tricks me every time.

It's a very minor inconvenience, but an annoying one.

You could do what I do and follow the threads you care about. Then you would just look for "FOLLOWED".

DGStinner gave you the real answer, just click to follow the threads you are interested in then click on the "new posts" button when it appears and it will show you the new posts in each thread you like and not any others. Or you can just look for the purple "followed" tag in the lists.

Thank you for repeating exactly what Dave already said, but it still does not answer my question. Anybody else?

OK, I will answer your EXACT question. It can't be done.

The site already has a method to sort threads that you want to follow, which is what we have suggested. It will give you what you want. Just look for the "followed" tag, instead of the "go to first unread" tag, it is even easier to spot, because it is coloured, specifically only shows the threads you want, it will even give you a handy list of just those threads you follow that have been updated and notify you when they are. This seems to be what you are wanting to do, except you want to do it with a different tag, not designed to do that job and can't be customised the way you would need it to be.

So, I am sorry for wasting your time trying to help you understand how to get the precise effect you are after (a quick and easy way to follow the threads you are interested in, without being sidetracked by others). I will leave you to wait for somebody to tell you how to do something which cannot be done to get the same result.

PS: It may be a long wait.
