It's hard to get the light right, but practice makes perfect.

Thanks Eric - hopefully as the year moves towards summer and good natural light I'll get some consistency. Flash is hard work!

Another one of this little sweetie with my friends Sigma 30mm 1.4. Even though I shot RAW, I played around with it a bit and I didn't like the WB in color so I decided on BW.

Here's an angle shades moth caterpillar taken with the Venus lens. It's going to take awhile sorting focus and light out. First four with the ring flash attached to the lens. The last one is with the softbox held off camera.

Paul.

Looking good mate, the last one with the soft box looks the best to me. The first ones seem a little dark.
Is your ring light an LED flash? I tried one of them and found it didn't give enough light.

What are your thoughts (pros/cons) versus the 100L?

Cheers
Gus

The flash is the Marumi ring flash - just a basic one with 2 tubes in it, though the only control over power is in camera.

Venus Pros:

It's IQ is excellent.
2:1 option without tubes is a great option.

Venus cons:
Hard to light subjects close up
Murder to focus if you don't open up to f/5.6. f4 or f2.8
Working distance is very short.

It's a challenge using the Venus especially with flash but it's going to get easier with time and practice.

Paul.
