I was visiting a couple of weeks ago my friend's cottage in central Finland. Near to the cottage I found this beautiful small stream flowing free, though it was -30 C (-20 F) that morning. Sun was about to rise, and a wiggy dipper (cinclus cinclus) (external link) was taking its morning bath.

Beautiful shots - I love the low sun angle illumination in #1 and #2. The dipper is precious

Awesome shots. I espeically like the second one. It's the golden sunlight dancing off the ice. Beautiful :)

What light is there. Love them.

The macro bird shot is not so good unless you are a diehard fan of the species.

Those shots are great...I commend you for going out in those temps...:) Do you have gloves? If so, what kind are they? I have been looking for a pair that are thin enough to work all of the camera settings, but still give my hands a little warmth...

Once again, great shots!!

Thanks all for comments and feedback. Light, as many of you have commented, was something we don't get every day ;) I was lucky to be threre in the right time.

:) Valid note. Also to forum is not the right for that ;) The photographic quality of that is also much less than the others due to heavy cropping and higher iso - I could not get very close to the dipper.

Nothing special, actually I had gloves I use every day, standard black leather type city gloves, with those you can handle a camera as well quite easily. To keep my hands warm, I put them back to the pockets once a while (more important is to have a good jacket).

I like the lighting of your second photo in particular. Was the -30 C just a sudden cold snap, as I was surprised that the water hadn't frozen over when I saw the photos?

Thanks John. This stream is an outlet of a small lake, and the flow of the water is so fast that it will not freeze in these temperatures. That's why these dippers are staying there as well.

This little islands of snow are cool to look at! I wonder how these might look in black and white?
