Taken from horseback during a trek through the Otago high country in New Zealand on Saturday. I never give this lens enough credit for its versatility and usefulness.

The zoom ring on my copy of this lens seems to creep to 19mm everytime I think it's set at 17mm. Not a big deal for me, but has anyone else experienced this?

never had that happen on mine, seems like it shouldn't do that since its a fixed barrel lens.

This. I was outside the fence. I just stuck the 17-40 right through one of those little squares and grabbed this little ass!

Well, in terms of settings I guess I could have dropped the ISO to 100. But, I have no real experience with tiny apertures. I went with f/10 with the thought that I am experimenting with avoidance of lens diffraction. Next question for owners of this lens is at what aperture does diffraction start to become a problem. Better phrased, how small of aperture are people generally comfortable shooting this lens? Finally, I did do more PP in LR to the shot above than I would like. I tried to expose as much for the highlights as I could knowing I could pull them back in post while not having the foreground totally dark. I used the ND filter in LR to pull the sky back and push the foreground. Personally, this is more manipulation of the original file's exposure than I would like to so. Hence my question about filters. I'd like to snap a shot and have the original file look as close to what I hope the final output will be. Basically, I'd like to get it as correct as I can "in camera". This is my first foray into this type of photography. Sorry for all the questions.

I've read to stay away from f/22, but you you should be fine going all the way to f/16 w this lens for these conditions np - then just hit the auto profile correct L17-40 button in LR if you like to see any recommended corrections. You'd also get the nice sun burst at f/16 if you're into that sort of look. f/10 is prob your sweet spot at a 90 angle from the sun, but for me, pointing at the sun - the perfect blue sky and sun burst is what I'd go for then drop the highlights if needed in LR etc. I'd say that would be my mimimum tweaks in LR setting here

Of course Cory shows up with something like this on day one! Nice shots! I need to practice with my 17-40. We just booked a 10 year anniversary cruise to Alaska for 2016! Need to be this good with it by then.

my experience and personal preference. I would not bother using a GND. If anything, a CPL and ND would do. ND for slow shutter shots that you want to do during the day time. CPL to remove reflections if preferred. I used to blend two images together using the same file. one I would have the sky underexposed while the other as desired. I do have ND and CPL filters but really do not use it at all. I should really sell them but it's nice to have in case I would need them :)
