I was just reading somewhere that the latest update - 10.10.2 has fixed a lot of the performance problems people were reporting with Lightroom on the new iMac. Any truth to it?

Just got my new iMac Retina last Monday -- driven by the fact that my old 2010 iMac died and was in need of a new logic (motherboard) board. Of course it was beyond the 3 year Applecare warranty i had purchased. Anyway, love the new one and thank god for regular backups. I didn't lose anything. I had no warning when it died. I pulled the HD from the old one and scraped the rest.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new iMac in the next months; my iMac 24" dated 2007 is giving me troubles (I think the motherboard or the graphic card; I hoped that by replacing the HD which broke down, everything would go fine and instead I can't watch my photos).

Anyway, I'm still in doubt whether buying an iMac 27" 5K or simply an iMac 27" with Fusion drive and 16 gb ram.

My question is: is the iMac 5K worthwhile the extra money compared with a normal iMac with more ram? Are 8 gb ram enough?

Thank you,
Fabrizio

8 GB should be plenty for most photographic work. However, I think the new Macs are really weak updates. Apple is making them harder and harder to work on.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I just added 16 GB of Ram to mine. It's significant;y faster loading web pages. Haven't used it for photo work yet. Cost was $190 form OWC.

the 27" iMacs are really easy to upgrade the memory.. just a door on the back you pop off and add the new memory to it. The screen you can never upgrade :)

I thought that to be true, however, I went from 8 to 16, and the upgrade has been significant. I run a lot more apps than just photo, but nothing absurd, just two instances of visual studio, and a few instances of remote desktop.

I have 8gb on standby, so cant wait to upgrade to a full motherboard to take advantage of 24GB ram. I can run a full week without slowdowns, but I like to reboot after a week for the sake of it. Running lightroom and photoshop seem like the biggest offenders of ram. Not running imac though, strictly PC speak.

For some reason, the 5K iMac i can associate with the $5,000 iMac :) Am I the only one thinking of this association?
