I use LR. I normally pick B&W look 5 and then lower the black a bit and bring up the midtones with the curves.

This thread inspired me to take more pictures of my kids now... I used to take a LOT of pictures of them but have been busy as of late... thanks man!

Great! I was the same way. A fixed lens and camera body got me right back into it. Easy to carry and use over the 5DIII.

This.
And one of my girlfriend's brother and his rescued Beagle. I want to go back and re-process this one, I think I could do better with it and it'd probably look better as a B&W, I did it as a color file mostly because I was trying to see what I could do with the a7R files, which unfortunately wasn't much which is why I ended up with the a7S instead :)

Great shot.

Two interesting things about this shot to me:
1) compositionally, I would normally clear all the shoes and clutter away, but it works in the photo and provides a sense of real life and place.
2) You can get away with the clutter I mentioned, I think, because of the strong visual connection between the (future?) BIL and the beagle. That strong visual line supports the whole rest of the composition.

Nicely done.

Thank you very much. I'm embarrassed by the clutter, but that's just where things end up when we walk through the door

Steven (in the photo) loves that shot though, he's been using it as his profile pic since I took it. He really loves that dog.

I always thought journalism is supposed to tell the story. Aren't the shoes and the Christmas decorations and the frayed cuffs part of the story. If you remove those, aren't you manipulating the story?
