Tonight The moon looked amazing but I'm tired of taking boring moon shots with no foreground. I also found out that its a little harder to do than I thought it would be.

I don't know if its possible with the shots that I took. If its not, I'm totally fine with that. Just thought I would ask before I gave up on editing them. If anyone can blend these two images without it looking terribly fake, that would be awesome. Or you could tell me what the process is...

Here are the two images if you want to edit yourself!

Well I have LR and PS but don't have a clue what to do. When I put the moon from the dark shot into the other one, it looked extremely fake and had a massive halo effect since the first shot has a black background and the second one has a brightly lit sky around the moon...

Here's my try. I don't know if it meets your criteria for fakeness though:

That looks SOOOOOO much better than when I did it. Can you please tell me how you did it though? I want this to be a learning experience!

Thanks. First you have enlarge the moon-only shot slightly to cover the halo produced by the over exposure of the second shot. Next, I cloned out the branch that touches the moon. Mask out the black sky in the moon-only shot and blend the two in normal blending mode. Now the moon is too dark and the light sky around the moon is too light, so on the moon layer I brightened the moon and added a bit of contrast then darkened the sky around the moon on the other layer. Blend again, make a new stamped layer, darken the whole shot slightly and make a few touch-ups here and there. Took about 20 minutes total.

I wish I knew how to translate that over to follow step by step -?

I still am new with masks.
1) Once the black sky photo is on top of the foreground image, how do you mask out the black sky?
2) When you say "blend again" when do you mean?
3) New stamp layer is uncharted water for me...

EDIT: I figured out the mask part. I selected the black area, inverted the selection, the created a layer mask.

Okay after about an hour of messing around, I think I got it figured out.
I played around a lot with the Refine Mask to soften the edge of the moon with a little feathering.
I also got more familiar with masking and layer adjustments.
After that I was able to use the Burn tool to darken the image around the moon to make it blend more.

Here is my final take.

Rather than mucking around with the refine edge tool, I usually just paint in the mask channel using a soft edged brush. Where you paint white you see the image, where you paint black you don't. Levels of grey in between give varying levels of opacity. So in the moon shot I would click the little mask icon in the layers tool pallet, thats the one with the little circle in the rectangular box, to activate the mask. This will also make the layer channel active. Then with the paint bucket tool I would fill the sky area with black. Just make sure the contiguous box is checked in the paint bucket tool. I would set the levels to about 50 or so. This will mask out most of the sky, you just need to go around the edge of the moon with a soft brush. I have to say I do use a pen tablet to paint in PS, as this also has pressure sensitivity. On something simple edged like the moon the whole process would take no more than a couple of minuets, if that. I find this method useful especially on complex shaped subjects, as you are effectively adjusting the level of feathering to suit each part of the subject individually.

I often use it to put some colour in the sky with aviation shots, as then I can add a gradient to the sky which looks more natural. Also for that I use the blend mode darken, which allows some of the detail from the underlying layer to show through.

Yes, I think this looks quite good. Al's suggestion of painting-in the moon layer is an excellent one and looking at it now I think that a very thin cloud layer would be nice over the moon. I may try it again later, I have a few other things to do now.

Go ahead and post it here if you make any further adjustments. I would also like to know what you have done. Love learning new things.

Great thread - love learning from these threads as they offer multiple approaches and views vs a PS tutorial on youtube. :)
