It seems to me POTN should have a nice healthy income stream but, for the standpoint of a casual user, I'm not seeing any of the usual indication of income generation. Speaking just for myself, I'd be happy to see many ads/

Ads appear for non members. If you sign out and browse the forums you'll see ads. However once you sign in they are removed and I would not like to see that changed.

You can help cover the cost by donating, see this thread...https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=57667

Mabe Pekka can turn that into a FYEO option. For those that really want to turn on ads, they can essentially "opt-in" and turn them on.

The default setting should be "off" like it is now.

Ads that are done in an unobtrusive, unobnoxious way can be useful. It's the ads that are placed between posts, flashy animated gifs that make us all hate them. Simple, viewer appropriate ads placed in the right margin are very easy to live with, I believe. And, sometimes I find myself clicking them. However, if anything annoys me I'll avoid it out of spite.

No joke whatsoever, just an understanding of simple economics. Someone always pays for free lunch. Seeing ads is a form of payment.

I don't mind seeing ads very much. I mean, sure, I prefer not to see them, but if they are there it doesn't really bother me.

I really wish the best for Pekka, and would love to see him turn this forum into something that really generated a lot of personal income for him. But then again, he may have a decent income already, and not need the extra money. But it does seem that this forum (and this software) could be a real cash cow for him if he wanted that. And if he does decide to go that direction, I would not mind seeing the ads, if I knew that they were rewarding him for all of the incredible work he has done over the years.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The problem, of course, is that only a small minority of users make voluntary contributions. Even sites with a paywall generate most of their income with ads.

As I write this there are 800+ members and 900+ visitors connected to PON. Jelloneck already answered my question above. At least right now a majority of users are seeing ads and producing some revenue.

"Id be happy to see many ads" <------ says no one EVER!
Ads are annoying and 99.999999% of users would prefer them gone.
Take YouTube for example. It was a great video site before every video started with a 15-45 second ad. Now I despise that piece of trash site.

J.M., it appears that you would be wrong:

It's an expression. I just find it absurd that someone wants ads on a no-ad site. Foolish.

Exactly...

To extend this a little further, if it weren't for ads in magazines and newspapers (paid for by users through subscriptions or retail purchase), and display advertising, I suspect that I, as well as others here would be out of business.
