Can anyone recommend a tripod for these long exposure shots? Would the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB kit do well?

My preference is for a tripod without a center column, or one that can be removed. Even the center column on my Gitzo was not as secure and tight as I would want for LE...so I took it out and mount the head directly to the base plate.

you can certainly get by with a center column. Older bogens and newer manfrotto 055's have center columns and super stable as long as not extended. IMO, leg sections make a bigger difference than pure center column or not. With low end tripods, the more sections can be even worse than center column extended.

I prefer no center column as well, because it can go very low, and I like shooting near water, it can make a nice effect shooting low.

center columnless tripods can be pricey, however I do have a tutorial on how to turn a manfrotto xprob 055 into a columnless tripod. Very stable, and can go very low:

kind of cheating here, but 13 stops to get any bit of movement from the high clouds:

only 10 stops on this one, wish I could have done about 5 or 6 more stops, but 14mm is limited to only one

yes, but it actually turned out badly and I had to do a correction. apparently, when you stack without a holder, the edges can cause flare, and that's what happened, however I fixed in post. I'm switching back to circular filters soon, have a set of 3,6,10 coming, nothing wrong with square filters other than the size. I'm going small and have a full small kit nowadays, from 14-200, so that should cover all of my landscapes.

Interesting way to hold/secure the filters in place.

DONT DO IT :-P

I went unprepared and had to use anything I could find. It did produce flaring since the filters were stacked, however if you have something to carefully drape over, you'll be fine. A proper filter holder will not let light come in from behind, and very little chance of flaring.

The left rubber looks like its going to slip over the filter.. Might end in broken glass

that too :p

it wont slip though, I purposely brought it to the edge so it wouldnt vignette. Generally, just a bad idea, however, I didnt want to handhold the filters for 3 minutes. For shorter bursts, I could probably handhold without any camera shake, the tripod is rather burly.

I cringe looking at that. I wouldn't be worried that the bands would slip, I'd be worried the tension on the sides would crack the filter right over the lens.

Lovely colors and tone in this shot! Did you warm it from the on camera result?

Thanks. I can't remember. Was with the B+W ND100 so it probably needed some WB adjustment in LR as Auto gets it pretty close but not perfect.
