Great, sharp! Using a spacer or extension tube?

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

Spring is just around the corner at my place. I plan on going to the local botanical garden later today (they open at 11:00am) and see what is starting to blossom there as well.

a7r + Canon 70-200 f4 IS. I wish the Sony 90mm macro was being released sooner than July!!

how do you do this?

It's actually not that hard. I remember playing around with built-in Photoshop filters years ago. Tried it again today and I could get similar results. Here's how it works:

  • Open your image in Photoshop (make sure it's opened as an 8-bit file or otherwise workarounds are needed to open the built-in Filter Gallery).
  • With your picture layer selected, click on Filter > Filter Gallery, choose Artistic > Poster Edges (play around with the sliders until you get an acceptable result) and apply the filter.
  • OPTIONAL: you can make a new B&W Adjustment Layer if you want (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black & White...).
  • Click on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels... and drag the Black Point Slider, the Midtone Slider and the White Point Slider (i.e. the 3 pointers just below the histogram) around until you are satisfied.
  • Cycle through the different blending modes (in the layers palette at the right side) for the Levels Adjustment Layer (and possibly the Black&White Adjustment Layer) you just created. There are many nice ones like e.g. Screen, Linear Dogde (Edge), Overlay, Hard Light, Vivid Light etc.
As for the workarounds for the Filter Gallery plugin when your image is opened as a 16-bit file...

  1. Make a copy of your document, and convert the copy to 8 bits per channel. Run the filter there, and copy and paste the result back into your 16 bit file.
  2. Convert your critical layer or layers to a Smart Object (select the layer or multiple layers, and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. Then, change the bit depth of your file by choosing Image > Mode > 8 Bits/Channel as we saw above. In this case, two important things happen:
    • The contents of the smart object remain at 16 bits/Channel!
    • All the filters now work, and as a benefit, they are applied as Smart Filters (see below*).

Thanks Tim. I have the Metabones III adapter. It was the only one available at the time and it work fine for me. I haven't noticed any light flares caused by it as others have mentioned.
