Speaking of extension tubes, this makes for a pretty decent close up lens.
Uncropped dime EXIF intact, bare lens plus 65mm of extension

QUOTED IMAGE

Funny you mention that. My wife woke up this morning to find this guy crawling about the kitchen.

IMAGE: http://smythie.id.au/images/D4/_ATS0894.jpg

300mm with 68mm of tubes on it. You can see a bit of vignetting starting with that much extension. Quite happy with the 100% crop

Also got the lens, D4 and Sigma 1.4tc out to the race track this weekend. Delivers some great IQ, particularly if when do my job when panning down at 1/125s

BUT, I have been struggling with this lens and body maintaining a lock on a subject coming straight towards me. Initial focus is accurate and quick but the combination will wait a few tenths of a second before reacquiring focus. I don't know if it's this lens or the body or my settings but it's pretty frustrating to not be able to nail a sequence of frames of a subject coming towards me (even slow speed less than 15mph/25kph has it struggling)

Bought this lens a little while ago but have not had a chance to really go and test it, only another week or so before some baseball and track and field hopefully! I did get to snap a couple of the squirrels in my backyard.

Nothing special here but I was fairly happy with the jump shot even though the focus was on his back foot. I'm excited to see what I get with track and field this year! I've previously shot T&F with the 7d and 70-200 2.8. I'm hoping I'll have much better separation as those events can leave a lot of messy backgrounds :)

Great timing on the squirrel Jelloneck! Doofus, if I had been through as much as that seal has I think I'd be sleeping too :-) Nicely done

My lens is gone, I admit I'm a little sad, like Jake said, it's an end of an era for me.

Jake, you need to pick up the slack and post as much from this lens as I did once ;)

It's true, I am now the Curator of Gabe's amazing 120-300.

I am not at all sure I will dare to post any shots for a while, as I will never live up to your standards.

I can say this based on my brief ( 30 minutes ago) 1st test. It is a perfect example of this lens.

Looking forward to a chance to take it out for real.

This thread will not be the same without your contribution. Better come in and comment so we don't get lost.

Truly the end of an era here at POTN. I look forward to the damage you do with your new ultra zoom!
