Shutter release button is the only thing in focus, dead center. The red streak is (presumably) a red L ring. The swoopy smudge of light in between those points is the side of the pentaprism box. When it's rather difficult for someone to figure out what they're looking at, and it's a item that they're very familiar with, it may be time to reconsider the vision and/or execution. Yes, you are absolutely right.

More info | Did you want it to be incomprehensible even to people that obsess over the category of the product? If not, it's worth remembering that you took the picture, so what seems like "just a hint," to you may be "not even close to enough context" for others. Honestly, I thought that the in-focus area might be part of computer mouse before puzzling it out. Bill is my name - I'm the most wanted man on my island, except I'm not on my island, of course. I guess I posted it in the wrong thread. ![]()

Other than cropping and some dust removal on the black glass there is no other post done yet. Still tonnes to learn though. I think it looks great! makes me thirsty

I think it's a fantastic photo. Product photography does not have to be brightly lit clear cut on a white background. That is the most simplistic form, and the most common, but by no means the ideal and defining standard. I could see a designer getting excited over your photo, it reveals only the smallest details, and does so with nice use of light. Take that single photo and turn it into a complete study of the camera, imagine revealing other details, and then the whole camera, all shot on black, and all shown with sweeping highlights and well controlled light. It would make a set of images to put into a catalog, poster etc. Product photography is not about creating a photo on it's own. Product photos are never shown or used on their own, they are always part of something bigger, a catalog, a webpage, a poster, and ad, endless types of marketing material. You have to consider that wider usage when taking a product photo. You are creating only a part of something bigger.

Looking at other pictures in this thread I really understand WhyFi's opinion. On the other hand, I took the picture just to let some of my friends know I finally bought the camera... without them knowing for sure what camera it was. The fact that I called it "Queen of the night" (this name works better in my native language and it makes some sense for those who know what I really like to photograph) also contributed for them not have that much trouble guessing what this was all about.
