Haha I'm in the same situation, what about the colour temp from the Bessel? Did you also find them too far off the warmth of the Elinchrom diffusion??

Yes, I also noticed issues with the color temperature.

How are you finding the Bessel strips? I have some but I'm not keen on them. The grids that come with them seem pretty mediocre and the diffusion material on mine at least put out a very cool tone which looks almost magenta by the time I've corrected the WB for the Rotalux.

I've not had a Bessel for a while but they've started selling them with much better looking grids, I'd try some out as they're dirt cheap but don't want to waste time with different colour temps with my existing kit.

Steer clear Simon! I'm not sure if I have the new grid or not, it looks good in their product shots, but I kid you not........ it's useless! And the colour temp is wayyyyy off to the point that turns my grey seamless violet!

Heya,

5D classic with a Tamron 180mm F3.5 macro lens, with a 2.0x TC (kenko pro 300 dgx), for a 2:1 setup. Most of these are under 2:1 but greater than 1:1, went for super tiny stuff to practice and get back into it this year.

Off camera lighting is a Yongnuo 565EX with a pair of Yongnuo RF603C II's. Set to manual, with 1/4th power, and zoomed back to 24mm to get the most even spread on the diffuser. Distance is roughly 18" from the 12" diffuser (Fotodiox) to the subject(s).

Setup:

Hanheld with 1/200s, F11 (F22 with the TC), F16 (F32 with TC) to get enough DoF, and nuke ambient light and rely on the flash to bring it back to get some isolation. ISO 400 to get the most out of flash power at 1/4th, and to get some ambient light back so it wasn't completely black. There's one shot at F32 that is completely nuking ambient light just to test it out.

Ya. I've used that set up before for that. Pretty simple and effective.

Heya,

Rounded out the evening with some baby painting.

Same set as the last time, so:

Neewer 24" x 24" softbox (cheap and great).
Yongnuo 565EX + YN RF603C II's.
Manual mode, 1/4th power, zoomed to 24mm for widest spread and most even light (my biggest mistake last time, I forgot to do this).
Generic impact stand.

5D classic + 200 F2.8L (v1) prime, with a 3 stop Marumi ND filter on the front to bring ambient light down, shooting at 1/200s, F2.8 and ISO 100, early in the evening so still pretty bright out (hence the ND).

I think I did better than the last baby painting set that I posted a few days ago. What do you all think? All criticisms welcome!

DThriller - Nice idea, this looks really good!

The only issue I really have (kinda of me being picky) is that the lights don't cover the whole background - above and left of they baby's head and then opposite side, bottom. Seems like it is something that could be easily fixed in post.

Thanks for sharing!

Good call thanks

It might have been bc my flash was on the lowest possible and washing out the xmas lights so I threw a bag over it to act as diffusion. Maybe I tweaked settings and forgot to tweak that one.

Yea go for it! I'm sure I stole it from some other shoot I saw. It popped back in my mind for this shoot bc the mother is really into xmas and I wanted to incorporate that without being to "xmasy".
