Very nice, the 200/2.8 is an excellent value for money lens, very sharp, fast AF, min focus is a bit long for some uses.

Well, I don't need to get as close to the critters that I shoot (sports critters) as the ones you do (and do well from what I have seen). I'm thinking about using the 200mm on a remote camera pointed at second base in a college baseball game. The question I will have to resolve is whether it, by itself, will be long enough or am I going to need to put the 2X III extender on it. I'm going to wait for a day home game to try this not a night game.

I'd love to be able to buy a 400mm F2/8 lens but I don't think that will happen anytime soon unless I win the lottery. ;)

The shapness with a 2x is ok but the AF speed drops a lot, if you pre-focussing on second base and leaving it in MF then that's not an issue. Oops we are getting off topic.

That's the plan. Enough of this off topic stuff. Here's a softball photo from last Friday.

So...I pulled the trigger on a 24-70 IS f/4 L...probably to eventually replace the 17-55, but still not sure it is 100% the right move. Guess I will try it out and see what I feel about it. Pros over the 17-55 are a better IS, macro, and sealing...but it is a stop slower and not as wide. Still not sure..

Keyan,

On the other hand..... you haven't been happy with your 17-55. I have mine up for sale but it doesn't exhibit the problems yours has been having on a couple different bodies now.

I love my 15-85 but I know it's a slow lens. I only use it for landscapes so I'm usually at f/8 give or take a stop. From all I've read, the IQ of the 24-70 IS f/4 is excellent. Let us know how it works for you.

PhotoHunter THANKS again! You live in a gem mining area of photography; but of course you know that.
We did hit the area behind the Y and I shot in the rain for a bit..nothing fantastic but the wetlands is just another
fabulous spot. We plan on returning to see how the babies are doing on the island after we get back from s.america;
maybe by then they'll be on the rim getting their first sips of being airborn.
I can't afford your pics but I can afford to buy you a beer next time :)
Also your night heron is PERFECT :)
OK, nothing pro level like yours or Kesters but here's something from the wetland-

The really dangerous part long term is that it is an EF lens...if both of my workhorse lenses become EF L class....there is only one ultimate outcome.

Are you wanting a jpeg straight out of the camera?? I usually just delete those after giving them to the university's SID but I'm shooting a baseball game tomorrow evening and I can probably get you a shot or two. Probably some high ISO ones when it gets dark late in the game.
