Here is a closer view of the Walnut Orb spider on my garden fence tonight - but she was at an almost impossible angle. 1.4x TC, 31mm tube, Venus lens, no cropping done. I couldn't get the lens any nearer to her face than this....

I think the cold had affected this cranefly - it was originally skittering wingfully (?) across the ground right by the back door of the house, but after a minute or two, ended up near the compost bin area on the soil there. It's flight was pitifully painful looking - it could barely flap its wings and I doubt that it managed to get itself 2 inches in the air at any point.

Anyway, these were as it manoeuvred across the soil:

I'm learning. Never tried a TC on a macro lens! Thanks Paul I'll give it a go sometime.

The 1.4x gets me a bit further back from my subjects with the Venus being so short at 60mm Robert.

So what's the verdict Paul. Do you prefer the Canon 100mm macro or the Venus?

I like them both!

The 100 will allow handheld summer shots, the Venus is seriously sharp but short and hard to master.

I can't split 'em!

Paul.

Yep I'm seriously thinking about the Venus, Paul you are either a great or evil influence. I've got an almost month long trip loaming and will mull it over again if I return. Speaking of trips we just returned from s.Carolina for eagles and egrets and waiting for me at home one of my loves-
