Beautiful Lilac Breasted Roller Charlie...we saw and admired them in the Kruger.
Mr.Sheehy, Maybe you've seen this one before, it's a major crop -bird was far far way, if I had to guess I'd put it at 400+ meters but best I've done with the 400DOii + c2.0TC, it is not acceptable to me but is what it is-

Charlie, Butch what do you think about Mr.Sheehy's observation concerning the dearth of user reports with the 400DOii. I do think it very strange.....strange enough to rumble thoughts to myself that this was a very limited test before advancing to the 600DO...probaby me creating my own dream reality.

A 600/5.6 DO could be easily hand-holdable; 600/4 DO might be heavy enough that you'd use a tripod anyway.

Anyway, I've come up with a theory about the dearth of 400 DO II lenses on the market. After looking at the test results on SLRGear.com, I've come to the conclusion that the copy they had was extremely defective, optically. They write in the review that it is sharp, but not quite as sharp as the 400/2.8 IS. A lens with an MTF chart as good as this should not show any discernable lack of sharpness compared to any other lens, without putting on a 2x TC or putting a Pentax Q on it. They comment that the lens is equally sharp from f/4 to f/22, and after that, starts to soften. That is absurd! Right away, they should have realized that their copy was completely defective if the test subjects were in focus. They said that it doesn't soften until f/32 with a 1.4x. Again the same absurdity, magnified 1.4x.

I looked at the test images they linked to, from a 7D at 100% crop, and they were horrible! The sharpness was about the same as a US $200 70-200mm zoom at 400mm with a 2x TC! It puzzles me how they published all this without noticing a problem!

So, maybe Canon shipped a lot of lemons, and pulled back everything that wasn't sold, and is testing them to sell them and/or are more carefully testing the lenses before they leave Canon. Warbler season starts soon (already heard a Pine today), and I was hoping to have something a little better than the Tamron 150-600 for heavily-cropped small birds for this season.

There was definitely a refinement to later issue dates of the first 400mm DO, so it is not inconceivable that Canon may be doing adjustments to generation II.

So far we've made it to Patagonia, spent the day working out of Punta Arenas, what a beautiful area. I know most fly in an head straight for TDP but we're in no hurry-

Finally home after 3+ weeks in Patagonia and a visit to Easter Island. The 400DOii again accompanying on a trip. Many shots with it and the 7Dii. Only once when imaging a short-eared owl at near dark did I wish for the 300 2.8.

One of the last from the trip; my favorite pic though was with the GH4, its what I had while hiking and me thinking for me the EOS too heavy to carry, its an Austral Pygmy Owl...cant post in this thread since this is a 400DOii thread but here is the link to the owl:

and here is one of the last with the 400DOii, yep in the wild, nothing against zoo pics but I've not had an opportunity to visit a zoo yet with a decent camera

I rented the 400 DO II for an air show. Here's some shot at 560mm (1.4xIII)
Btw, these are much sharper when viewed from my pc. I seem to lose a bit of IQ when posting online.
