Do you have GPS turned on? Even with the camera turned off, it still tries to find a GPS signal, thus using up the battery. At least this is how it worked on the 6D, so I turned it off. I haven't tested this yet on my 70D since I just got it.

70D doesn't have GPS. If you leave the wifi on it can cause drain, but in this case it is likely the lens. Guys, this thread is several months old, not sure why it's back from the dead.

As stated earlier, this is a problem with the original release of the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC on all Canon bodies manufactured since the T4i/650D. Firmware update is not the solution. The lens has to be physically modified or replaced. Canon does not release info to third party lens manufacturers. Reverse engineering is required and can be tricky. One of the main reasons for slower AF from 3rd party manufacturers.

I have a brand new 70D. The Battery dies EVERY night. I have several different lenses, all Cannon. As the camera is only 1 week old I don't think its a contact issue. I think this is a 'Canon needs to speak to this directly' issue.

Anyway, So far I am not overly impressed. I have missed several photo opps because of this. I like to hame my camera ready to go!.

Canon, What do you have to say about this?

I would return the camera rather than mess with it.

The problem may exist with a Tamron lens but I only own Canon lenses. Batteries are two weeks old and so is the camera. They drain EVERY NIGHT. Only way to stop it is to take them out!

Not the lens or wifi in my case - This is a real problem. Batteries drain in about 2 hours in between shoots.

Gee sorry for brining it up again! But it doesn't seem like anyone knows what the actual problem is.

If the camera is only a week old it may be that you have not ran the battery through enough full charge cycles yet for the battery to be up to full charge. Usually takes two or three charges and partial discharges before a rechargeable battery will charge to its full potential.

My only problem with a 70d discharging too quickly was due to using a third party grip and forgetting to turn the power off on the grip. This will run either of my batteries down. If you don't leave that switch on, the batteries will stay charged just like they are not in the camera.

I have noticed this has just started happening on my 70D.

I have a new Venus 2:1 macro lens on, but I think the problem mat have started a fortnight ago - which coincided with my purchase of a Kenko 1.4x TC and a Yongnuo YN14EX ring flash.

It may be one of these that are causing my problem, as it is happening with all 4 of my batteries...

I've only had that problem with a Meike battery grip for my 60D. No problems with my 70D or 7D2.

I had heard, at one time, that the 100 L macro could cause batteries to drain, but I haven't had a problem. (knocks on good glass)

If the batteries discharge in only two hours, they should get quite hot. Is this happening? If not, could there be something wrong with the charger?

I know of a similar instance, not a 60D but a tilt screen where the user had set the screen to never turn off. The screen was turned inward so it was never realized that it was on. Only took a few hours to kill the battery.
