A few from Healesville Sanctuary yesterday.

The flying display was a good test for the photographer as well as the lens and the body...I definitely need more practice!!

I did manage to catch the Whistling Kite mid mouthful though

And I was also happy with a few of the Osprey shots.

Apologies if this has been asked before, how would anyone rate this lens agains the 70-200 II? Im looking to get either the 70-200 II again or the 100-400 II, would the 70-200 be on par with the 2x extender III on the camera?

Or should I just go for the 100-400 II?

Dexy101, I think that part of the questions depends on what body/ies you shoot with. I have not bought the 70-200 ii because i use both a 5dmk3 and a 7d mk2. In my view the low light ability of my 5dmk3 means I would rather have the 100-400mk2 and the image quality is now so close between the two that its not really a differentiator. Other than that I suppose also depends on what you spend most of your time shooting. If wildlife, I'd probably choose the 100-400 unless the 2.8 is a deal-breaker for you.

Dexy101, I am probably not the most qualified person to comment, but I do own both of these lenses. You are presumably refering to the f2.8 70-200? The thing that surprises many, including myself is the sharpness of the new lens over its range of focal lengths.
It is certainly on a par with the 70-200 and I cannot disagree with some who dare to suggest it may even have the edge at some settings. It does not have the quality of bokeh, however.
Do you own the 2X extender III? If so it will not allow AF with the 100-400. So its all related to what you shoot, and the body you use, whether full frame or crop.

Keith

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

I used to own and shoot with a 5D3 and 70-200 2.8 IS USM II

I always Wanted more reach when I had that lens on that body.
I've now gotten a 1DIV and want to get another lens. I just thought the 100-400 May be better as its longer. Obviously the 2x extender will equal it with the 70-200 but I've never used the extender before.

I think I would be better getting the 100-400. Some of the images here have been awesome.

I've no experience with the 70-200 with TC, however my 100-400 II is sharper over the 100-200mm range wide open than my 70-200 at the same apertures (not that there's a night & day difference, but noticeable if you compare side by side images).
But I've no plans to get rid of my 70-200 as there are occasions it's simply better suited for - particularly when the wider end matters more and of course f/2.8.

As others have mentioned it probably depends on what you shoot most of. I think I'd find the decision harder now with both of these on the market together, but for me it'd be a decision as to which to get first ;-)a.

I went to the last day of the 2015 John Jones Steel NZ Nationals last weekend, this is my first attempt at photographing jet ski racing.
A few ideas to try another time, among them to consider low speed continuous drive - still have quite a few to go through!
