Nope, but it makes me look awesome! Slowly getting the hang of some difference between it and my Canon - I shoot mostly jpeg since most shots are of my kids. I have to say even in jpeg the files are amazing! (Now I just need to figure out how to get my settings closer to my LR results so as to have less PP...)

Here is one shot from today. Shot using a Tamron 28-300 VC PZD (the newer one), my daughter was in the driver's seat of a fire engine.

If it's like the 70D owners group I'm sure it's welcome. Then again not sure if in the forum change there was some desire for modifying that.

I am so glad I decided to buy this camera as a fallback in case my Canon 7D would break down
(But seriously: I vacillated for a month which one to buy to replace the 7D with: the 7D Mk II or the D750.)

Big question. If it would be easy to answer I did not need to think about it for so long. The 7D Mk II has almost all of the advantages, except image quality, dynamic range and shallower depth of field (using the same equivalent focal length and the same aperture). Its IQ is very good - before the Nikon D7200 it was considered the best in the APS-C crowd. But IQ was not so much better than that of my 7D as I had hoped it will be. As I had the money to buy lenses wit it I switched and I am (still) happy with it, and that's the main point.

The camera continues to impress me! Or maybe it is a combo of the camera, it being full frame, the lens, or me having moved over from a Canon 70D. But I am LOVING the resulting files (they are not perfect out the box but the post processing in LR5 is fairly minimal it seems, and when I do need to push something to recover an extreme mistake in exposure it works great... and this is the jpegs!

This week was able to go out and shoot some Varsity Softball. Lord I now WANT a longer lens... 200 won't cut it and I think my 28-300 might not be fast enough on AF (didn't get a chance to test) and hell still think that the 300mm might still be too short!


The following shots were D750 with Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1 all @ f/2.8 cloudy conditions SS/1000 or so. I let the auto-ISO do it's job. I was using 21 point group focus (I tried 3D tracking and 9point and was not happy with the results at first. 21 point seemed to work extremely well for what little experience I have)

I am also amazed at how clear the pictures turned out for having shot through thick chain link. Although when I look I can see exactly where in the frame the links ran across the lens.

Those are great shots! Shoot some RAWs...you'll be amazed at the flexibility in the files.

Thanks, yes I played around with some RAWs last night. Took some shots of the edge of my monitor as it fell off into darkness (I have a copper orange colored monitor so I thought the color comparison would be cool).

I was amazed at how pliable the RAW was and the output was miles better than the jpeg - but then again it was an extreme situation so the jpeg was setup to fail but it does illustrate it well!

Now on to the purpose of my post!

Having switched from a 70D, becoming comfortable with the AF system on the D750 is taking some getting used to - especially since the AF point spread is more tightly packed in the middle.

I am way too used to running in AI Servo (AF-C). So I have picked up on using that and the dynamic point groupings and regular groupings.

The part that is vexing me is 3D and Auto groupings...and more importantly reading in articles on the D750 how people use them to shoot weddings etc and that it instantly sets the AF points on peoples eyes!

From my understanding this would be the face detect setting kicking in right? Or is it a different algorithm separate from face detect?

The other thing - and the manual has been clear as Mississippi mud - I assume that face detect is limited to only specific modes and settings.

My assumption is that it works in AF-S mode and sometimes in AF-C? But also is limited to very specific AF groupings, like 3D and Automatic? But to complicate things I KNOW that when I am in AF-C and taking pictures using Dynamic groupings and group AF that when I review shots there is the lovely block that shows where a face was detected...

So basically under exactly what drive modes (AF-S, AF-C, AF-A) and which AF Modes/groupings does Face Detect work under? AND is it really as good as the reviews make out? As I have failed at using it for such and results have been poor... but maybe it was because I don't understand when and how to use it?

I haven't explored enough with the various AF-area modes to be an authority here so I must rely on what the manual has written on pages 121-128.

From what is written, face detection will engage in 'Auto-area AF' mode regardless of focus mode (AF-A, AF-C, AF-S) and will engage when 'Group-area AF' mode and AF-S focus mode are selected. I don't see any mention of face detection for the other AF-area mode/focus mode combinations.

AF modes are so confusing

so...for events shooters, reading weddings , what profile do u use ?
adobe standard - way too much orange. i hate orange
camera standard - very good for outdoor, adds a lil contrast, colours are nice
camera portrait - best for trash the dress, where u post-process alot the images.
but, for now, i could not find a good indoor profile. when only 1 main light source avaible, the skin is nice with camera landscape, but when i add a flash, or some dj's coloured lights, it gets tricky and i have to work more with saturation levels, shadows calibration, etc.

what suit u better ?

New D750 owner reporting! Picked mine up yesterday. First impressions are pretty good, body seems nice and although I've been using Canon for over 10yrs, it all seems pretty logical to me. So that's a big plus. Performance and IQ is amazing, only letdown for me (for now) is the 24-120/F4 which isn't bad at all, but it seems not as sharp as the 24-105L I had on my 5D3. Did some focus tests to be sure it's not front/back focussing and it's not, so it's just the lens itself. Have a 85/1.8 on the way too.
