Not me.....this Great Blue Heron. He's about 2 months earlier than normal arriving here, and he picked the wrong year to show up early. He looks totally confused and annoyed (polite term) about all the ice and snow hes come back to. He won't be finding any open shorelines or open water to wade in for quite awhile, and his life is likely in jeopardy. (side note..I was sitting in my truck waiting for an eagle to show up and a large shadow came overhead. I got out of my truck fully expecting to see an eagle, and this was about the last thing I expected to see.)

Good shots, Ian. They usually show up here too when there's still ice. Let's hope for a quick melt for this guy.

Nice shots. Nature has a way of weeding out the ones who make the wrong decisions.

He made a bad decision, but you didn't! Great set Ian. Last summer my son watched a Great Blue Heron catch and swallow a rat! Hopefully he will find something else to live on while he waits for the ice to melt...along with the rest of us in the cold climates!

Great shots Ian. I have seen them out in fields hunting voles and mice. Don't count this one out yet.

Great series Ian. Hopefully he'll find some sustenance to tide him over for a few more weeks.

Nice photos!! I just looked at your flickr stuff. Nice but a LOT of photos!!! We just got back from Manasota Key a couple of weekends ago. My good friend has a house there on the beach, we go every year or every other year for a long weekend. I have a few pictures from there on my flickr page too.

Terrific series! Not a bad outing, even if you didn't get your eagle :-)

Thanks Ed....I use Flickr as a failsafe system against data loss, so I upload every pic that I actually keep. It seems like a lot, but it's free so I'm taking advantage of that, even if it is just the low-res version that I save there.

Thanks folks. A few more were spotted in the area yesterday too.....hopefully they know better than we do! The melt is on in the meantime.

Great shots, Ian. As for the survival thing, I'm going with the bird.

Very nice series Ian.

Interesting that he arrived too early. I had either a Heron or Egret fly over my house this afternoon. I've never seen them flying near my house. The direction he was headed is puzzling, as there's no ponds or lakes for miles, just farm fields. He may have came from a reservoir which is about 15 miles away. Just surprising. Tried to get some BIF of him, but wasn't prepared.
