It is that. One of my cousins has been tracing our family roots way back. She currently working on one line in the early middle ages. One line she traced back to a distant relative who became ill and died in jail. According to the records, he had stolen a black sheep.

Sometimes you discover things better left buried in the past.

For a lot of Aussie we are proud of our Convict ancestors - they built this nation. I've been researching my family tree since the '80s and only since Ancestr.com came about did I find the convicts I suspected, could have found them before but it would have been a lot more work. Here my convict ancestors. The last two are my G-G-G-G Grandparents, their daughter married my Carlill ancestor who first came to Australia.

Catherine Howe
Trial: Apr 1828 in Kilkenny, Ireland; Deported to Australia for stealing clothes, 7 years
Immigration: 12 Nov 1828 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; On "City of Edinburgh"

James Harrison
Trial: 08 Sep 1821 in Athy, Kildare, Ireland; Stealing Copper. 7 years
Immigration: 09 Sep 1823 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; Aboard the "Earl St. Vincent"
Ticket Of Leave: 18 Aug 1828 in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia

Owen Tunny
Trial: 27 Oct 1836 in Boyle, Roscommon, Ireland; Trialled for larcency, stealing linen
Immigration: 05 Aug 1837 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; Aboard the 'Calcutta'
Ticket Of Leave: 15 Oct 1841 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Richard James Burnett
Trial: 12 Jul 1823 in York, Yorkshire, England; Sentenced to life for burglary
Immigration: 13 Sep 1826 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; Aboard the Marquis of Huntley/Port Jackson
Ticket Of Leave: 19 Jul 1834 in New South Wales, Australia

Sarah Hichman
Trial: 10 Sep 1823 in London, England; Larceny ... dwelling house/Old Bailey
Immigration: 23 Jan 1825 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; Aboard the Grenada (third voyage)
Ticket Of Leave: 29 Nov 1832 in New South Wales, Australia; Good conduct in service, reported in The Australian/Patricks Plains (near Singleton)

It's amazing to find out more than just peoples names. For example, I have the Second Postmaster of the NSW colonies and someone who was the Water Police Magistrate of Sydney as ancestors. My wife has an similar number of convict ancestors. Chances are if you can trace someone back earlier than 1830-40 then there is a real good chance they or their parents were transported here.
