Great thread Don! Noticed you have some of our "Heat" players in the first set of images - I shoot for UBCO :)

Thanks Ken, good to hear from a fellow varsity sport photographer. Your shots are spot on, looks like you have a pretty good venue to shoot in.

Didn't realize that you guys were in Canada. I haven't shot any action shots but I did do club team and individual photos for Raincity based out of Cloverdale, BC. These kids would be Grade 11 and I've coached a bunch at this club in Elementary school.

QUOTED IMAGE

This is quickly turning into a Canadian thread, although I have volleyball is played elsewhere. Nice group shot, they look pretty intimidating.

Have any of you shot at one of the convention center tournaments where they use the temporary RED courts? They reflect terribly on players' skin, and make their faces bright red. I have tried adjusting with PP in Aperture, but it tends to make everything else take on a green tone.

Any tried and true methods out there?

I use an ExpoDisc to take a custom white balance... which now that I think of it wouldn't help with what you indicated. But, probably the reason it hasn't been an issue, is that I also use an XRite Color Checker and then create a profile from that in LightRoom which color corrects very well. You can then also use that to grab a grey sample to reset the white balance during processing too. And of course, you would want to shoot RAW in that setting. You lay the color checker on the court and take a shot of it, which would have all the red reflection on it.

This thread is nearly dead. Let's see if I can add in a couple of pictures. I shoot several different sports, but Volleyball is by far the most difficult. The gym lighting is awful, and the lighting varies in temperature through the room.

Well, here is another post from Canada...Don, great images from U of A! I recently shot my first volleyball at the BC PACWEST Championships (College level) and boy what a learning experience! I did find a vantage point way up high at one point that gave some neat perspective down on court. Here are a few samples...you can see all the rest of my meager rookie attempts at http://christianjstewart.zenfolio.com/p32742823 (external link) There is also another thread on it in the forum HERE.
