LoneRider, definitely give it time to get your technique down with this lens. I have the 6D, and I like you was not thrilled with the initial shots I was getting with the lens. I did end up doing an MFA at the long end and over time, I learned that it was my technique that was the issue not the lens.
Now that I am comfortable with the lens and it's best settings for certain types of shots, I really love the shots I create. I got this shot while my wife was running on the local high school track, while I was sitting on the bleachers. She was running so I had to bump the shutter a bit more than I would normally, but the 6D performance on ISO meant the 400 ISO was not a concern.
This thing is freaking amazing when you get the settings right. I was on AI Servo, continuous shutter, auto ISO at 6.3 (you can see the background starting to bokeh) at 1/800th.

I picked up one of these from a local shop but was less than impressed with it on my 6D. Seemed a little soft and messing with MFA didn't make much difference.

I returned it and picked up a used 300mm f/4, and even on a crop body it just didn't give me the reach I wanted. IQ was better than the Tamzooka for sure, but wasn't sure how much that would change if I went with an extender.

I kept watching this thread and seeing the AWESOME photos people are getting with this lens so I figured it obviously isn't the lens' issue and maybe I just didn't give it enough time and effort on my part.

Giving it a second chance, I bought a used one local on Craigslist - like new condition, box, receipt, etc. Guy got it just a few months ago and then decided to jump on the 100-400 II. Got a great deal on it and from my initial shots of static objects, this copy seems to be sharper than the first one I tried.

Looking forward to seeing what I can do with it and get a shot or two worthy of posting in this thread.

I cannot for the life of me get the sharp detailed shots that I see in this thread from my copy. I have sent it back to Tamron for the firmware update, and it seemed to come back even worse. I really am about to give up on it. It's not like I'm a novice with a camera either! :(

I had one like that, and I did send it back. I figured if I can't at least get reasonable shots with it...from a tripod...something was wrong with it. NOTHING i did helped, the shots were terrible...I mean REALLY bad. I'm sure it was a bad copy.

I'm now awaiting the Sigma.

almost sold on getting this lens, ample talent posting here. Just awaiting reviews of the Sigma Contemporary to come in.
Was gunna pull the trigger on the 100-400 II, but with the money I save, I can easily get the 10-18mm and the new 50 STM coming soon

Nice shots all ~

Great shots on here, but I got the Sigma (C) today and pleased after a 1st day of tests. Sigma has better features, for me anyways. All the best ~

Had a hawk low in a tree on the way home. I took several shots and he/she let me get within 10 feet. Thankfully I checked around the area later in the day and it was no where to be found. Hopefully, it flew away and is doing ok now.

I'm still amazed at the lack of any reviews and low sample turn out from Sigma, pro reviewers, or it's users.

Yeah me too! but like the 60D and 70-300L IS... I'm again an early adopter ;-)a
I've had it for 27 hrs now and I'm quite pleased with it. I figured the IQ would be the same, but it was the accessories and features over the Tamron that made me get my wallet out...
