funnily enough my lad is having the same problems with a 500mm nikon f 4 prime ,bare lens o.k with nikon 1.4tc it needs adjusting between 18 and 20 and still not right ,on a personal note i think i will probably sell my canon t.c and just concentrate on the bare lens ,might also sell my two cameras 1D3 and 70D and get a 7D2 .as the i.q on the 70d is surpassing the older camera .things move on we have to move with them i suppose

canon 1Dmkiii, sigma150-600mm.os.sports ,canon 28-135mm.is, ,lots of other gear to
tried the rest got the best

yea went out and shot with it a bit today and i am leaning towards returning the TC too now...Jeff do you now whether or not the new TC with the lens meant to report f/8 or does it still report f/9 but able to focus on f/8 bodies...because up to this point i read that it supposed to report f/8 but i can't find anything official from Sigma...on their site it simply says able to AF with f/8 bodies

i ask that because i do find that ability to hit focus drop noticeably...i know it's meant to suffer but bit surprised at the level of degradation considering the new TC are made for the new S lenses

shop i bought it from wants me to bring it back so they can test it in shop and determine whether or not it is truly at fault as to give me replacement...but i may insist on refund instead :-/

Yeah, I've never been happy with TCs at all.. that said, i've never owned a Canon one but, have a Sigma 2x TC that I used on a sigma 120-300 2.8 sports, and the image degradiation and AF is really, really noticable.. hence why i ended up buying the 150-600.. I realise people need extra length, hence the need for a TC, but they're always a compromise.. the biggest thing I noticed was the AF, with it being much slower, and less accurate. I've learnt my lesson and would never buy another TC.. well, not unless it was on some really expensive glass and it was canon versions.. the sigma ones aren't that great..

hey Vladdo the one i bought is the new TC-1401...from what i see image quality is actually very good just the AF is a real concern...particularly the bizarre back focusing when bare lens is perfect :-/

BBF6 sounds like you dont have the dock to tune your TC with lens.. A consideration is to send/take your Body, TC and Lens to Sigma in Austrailia, or perhaps rent or buy a dock. Over the years I seen folks on the forum send in the body and lens to the manufacture.

Good luck sorting it out.

hey thanks Bianchi, I actually do have the dock but didn't think the TC worked with it? maybe I should try it nonetheless...the other concern for me is that my lens bare is dead on focus wise (going by what I've seen so far from real shoots and quick test against calibration targets) so I didn't want to muck that up

Sounds like the TC may be your culpert, cant you revert back from where you are now on the bare lens, after adjusting with TC if it does not help ?

Hey Paul...I'm picking up a D750 soon and thinking of picking up a Sigma 150-600mm too to shoot big wave surfers. Can't wait to see what you come up with with your combo set. Congrats.

larry i THOUGHT ? !!!! the sigma t.c was supposed to report at f8 ,if it doesn't i can't really see the point of buying the sigma one ,BUT something at the back of my mind says there was a update/notifaction from sigma a while back something to do with setting the t.c to the lens but once done you couldn't then use it on any other lenses ,possibly have to do a firmware upgrade without the lens attached or maybe with the lens attached grrrrrrrrrr i know i read it but can't remember where .i'll try to search it out for you

yea should be able to since it would just be a complete reset (since it needed no adjustments to begin with) but I will be back in shop tomorrow after work so I might do that first

yea that's what I thought too reading around the internet, but I looked on Sigma Australia's website but I can't find any official statements regarding that...it simply says able to AF on f/8 bodies when attached to 150-600 after the LENS undergoes firmware update (which will make it not work with the older APO TC's I remember reading)

yet on B&H saw one Nikon user review the TC 1401 saying that he/she sets to aperture priority and f/8 as recommended by sigma and it works a treat so I dunno right now :(

oh and it's Tony btw :P

edit: also forgot to mention I did try attaching just the TC straight to the dock but that did nothing didn't recognise it haha

Is the -5 using in-camera MA or the dock with the lens? The reason I ask is I'm seeing something similar with the 70D and the Sigma 150-600mm C. For distances within 100 ft, the 70D and lens are dead-on without any MA. For longer distances, I've observed back focus issues. I had to adjust it to an in-camera MA of -5 to correct the issue as a temporary fix.

The lens with the 40D is great at all distances without any focus adjustments of the lens using the dock.
