Had a DO on loan from Canon this week, but was only able to use it today (work got unexpectedly busy.) Decided to brave the thunderstorms and stop by the zoo for a bit. The weight is absolutely insane compared to other tele's! 400 is way too tight for my standard uses (even moreso with the 1.4x), but it's fun to play around with every now and then.

This one was at 1/30... the DO's IS definitely seems pretty solid.

Thx. All of the gear goes on that trip. Has to. It is one reason I own it. And spent soooooooo much time learning to use it.

It was a nice cool clear Washington night. This is from the JPEG small picture since my work computer can't deal with RAW photos and I don't have internet at home :( Lot's of the black/blank space was cropped out.

advaitin - your images are absolutely convincing that the "contrast issues" of the 400mm DO are not as big an issue as people make them out to be.

And I want to thank the people posting in this thread for helping convince me to get this lens. Mine should show up today and I'm really hoping it is good enough to make me want to sell my 500mm. Now that the value of this lens has dropped into the ~$3,000 territory I'm surprised people aren't talking about it more.

After taking a few test shots with my new (to me) 400mm DO, I'm going to break the thread rules slightly... these three shots were taken with 3 different lenses. Each lens was mounted to the same 1.4x teleconverter and Canon 7D Mark II. They all have very close to the same amount of post processing applied: some cropping, exposure adjustments, and a little sharpening. ISOs between 100-1000 and apertures ranging from f5.6 to f9. Same species subject in the same location on different days. The lenses are Canon 300mm f2.8L IS, 400mm f4 DO IS, and 600mm f4L IS. Can you tell which is which?

And here's one with a 500mm f4L IS + 1Ds III + 430ex for some more measure just because I haven't used the 500mm with the 1.4tc + 7DMKII yet.

Disclaimer: yes, I know this is not a perfect test. However, it is pretty real world and after reading a bunch of knocks to the 400mm DO I thought this was an appropriate comparison.

Disclaimer #2: don't make a lens buying decision based on comparing these 4 images.

Just bought one of these. They seem to be a loved and hated lens but for the price I got it for it should be awesome. I can't afford a 300 2.8 IS so this is as close as I'd get and 400mm is more useful I found. Looking forward to posting some surf shots :)

Not sure how people say this lens isn't sharp?! I think it's awesome. I grabbed a 1.4x iii to use with the lens which was perfect timing as a large storm (verging on cyclone) hit Sydney. This was the Manly to Circular Quay fast ferry battling the swell. Not perfect lighting as you can imagine and I was struggling with 100km/h winds!

We also saw waves at Balmoral beach which is a beach inside the harbour, something we rarely see.

This was taken yesterday, after the storm had died down a bit. Waves were bigger elsewhere but I only had my lunch break to grab a few shots.

Hi @ all,

I´m new in this forum.

I bought this lens a few weeks ago and I really like it. This is one of my very first attempts:

^ Nice!

I'm pretty happy with this shot of the full moon from last night. It's so sharp, even with an extender. This is with the 1.4x III. Way better than my old 300mm f4 L.
