EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Review WOW!

So what do people think about using the 100-400Mkii with the Canon x1.4 mkiii?

I have the classic 100-400 and when I shoot BIFs (1DmkII and 5d MkIII) with the extender, I find the results "ok".

Will upgrading to the new 100-400 make any difference in picture quality when used with the extender (I am happy enough with AF speed and accuracy)? What's been your experience?

Or should I keep my classic 100-400 and sell the extender to part-finance a 150-600 Sigma Contemporary?

Really grateful for any first hand experiences.

With the talk about the 1.4II, I put it on and went out for a bit. I think I like shooting the lens bare but the 1.4 can be a help sometimes

I used the 7D-I and EF 100-400 IS-I extensively for birds in flight. I was never completely satisfied. When I upgraded to the 7D-II it gave new life to my EF 100-400 IS. Focus was faster and better. Overall image quality was much better. But image quality with the 1.4-II extender still suffered. I just recently received the new EF 100-400 IS-II. WOW. I really didn't expect to see much difference between the Mark-I and Mark-II. Night and Day. The Mark-II is faster, sharper and images with the 1.4-II extender are very very good. This is probably one of the best upgrades I have ever made.

Thank you guys - very helpful. The 100-400 mkii is a lot of cash in the UK ($3,000 give or take) and not too far, price-wise, from a used 300mm f2.8 IS.
The feedback here has been reassuring. I knew that AF speed and IS would be better , but great performance with the extender is the decider for my needs.

I believe it's all grey import, but I've bought bodies, lenses and TCs from them, and have had no problem registering them on Canon's CPS site. It can take a couple of weeks for delivery, but I generally only hear good things about them. They do apparently have a store in Surrey, but I've never visited. I've no links other than being a customer.

That's a great price! I definitely do not have a problem buying used! I'm still shooting with a 6d for everything & love my camera , but will be buying the 7d mkii & the extender for wildlife.

^6D is an awesome camera. I just spent 3 weeks comparing it to a Sony A7s, another great camera.
Anyway back to the topic of the 100-400ii, not that I missed it but I'm finally back home and now shooting in
the backyard, this one SOOC, probably could have use a wee bit of denoise but I'm too tired-

I use the 6D mainly for nightime/astro but I've done BIFs with it too, that one center cross point is amazing. I do love the phoneability of the 6D too, anyway here's another via the 100-400ii

Finally got mine in today, It is indeed a very fast and sharp lens.

My main complaint about this lens is I can't put it down.

For example, it's raining out there and it's dry in here and I keep on messing around.
