They are not cropped so quite close, maybe 2 feet?

EDIT - exif says 0.54m for the ginger and white cat and 0.47m for the brown cat so both within 2 feet (0.6m)

Thanks.

Since I don't find a thread for "general lens talk", I am going to ask my question directly here (if its okay, if not please say where I can move this. Thanks!).

I am now certainly changing my Nifty 50 for the 50L in the near future. I found out, that the newer copies of the 50L are sharper than the older ones.
If a bit of MFA is needed, I am totally fine with that but I want to get save about having a newer and sharper copy with a new production date.
Now there are two ways to buy this lens for me:

1. Going into Calumet photographics store, testing the sharpness and if the focus nails... or
2. Buying it online from Amazon.

I don't know where the chance is bigger to get a nice and new copy from this lens, I feel more safe with buying it in the camera store, but somehow I think that Amazon might have newer copies?

I can't check how new the copy in my camera store actually is, maybe its fresh ordered from Japan but I don't wanna buy the lens which is laying there since like 5 years or so.

Thanks in advance for your answers! :)

Just remember the 50L is reasonably sharp at f/1.2 (wide open), but it's not going to look razor sharp straight out of the camera. You will likely need to post process and add some sharpness to make the image really "pop".

That said, you don't buy the 50L for sharpness. There's a certain je ne sais quoi look and feel to the 50L images, especially when shot wide open that you can't get from other lenses.

Yeah I acutally know that and I am totally okay with that. I love the look and the bokeh, and the overall style of the images. Otherwise I would buy that Sigma 50mm Art thing, but the bokeh is looking awful. :P

I have a planty of lenses which need a bit of post process so I am totally used to this. Just wanna get sure I get no lens which is extremely soft and out of focus.

A copy that you buy from 5 years ago will be just as sharp as one you buy a year from now... There's been no "silent update" on the 50L, not sure where that rumor came from or how anyone short of Lensrentals or major testing facility with a huge sample selection would be able to scientifically prove that. My anecdotal evidence: My 50L is over 5 years old now, and it is just as sharp as the brand new ones I see on here.

Buy with confidence from a major retailer w/ a return policy. If you are really worried about it, buy 2 or three lenses at once, test them in your home and keep the one you deem sharpest, and return the others. I can certainly understand wanting to get the best lens for your money, so do the busy work now so you can put your mind at ease and start posting some 50L pics!

Thanks for your information. I think I am going to buy at my retailer of trust and try which one is the sharpest.

Sometimes you really need another 2 opinions to know whats the best. :)

Have a nice day!

mines is a UZ date code (2011) and was purchased second hand on ebay. Most sellers will tell you the date code if you ask. Whether or not there has been a silent update or not I always like to buy reasonably new lenses if the option is there. In reality it probably doesn't make a difference. If buying new amazon would be my preferred option as they have the easiest return system I have cane across (no quibbles, they email a postage label, I drop it off at my local newsagents using collect+)

Mine is from 2015, absolutely no problems here: focus is spot on (-5 MFA) on all distances and all apertures. It doesnt matter if the target is close to MFD or few meters away or if the lens is focusing at infinity. Tried to push it on purpose to see this famous focus shift and it is or so small, that its not affecting photos at all. Its basically point and shoot glass, glued to my 6D. What a lens!

I think a lot of the negativity is based on the fact that the Sigma is so much cheaper new than the Canon. And it is undeniably sharper.

True that, but 50L is sharp enough, really. Obligatory cat @1.2, SOoC:

Bring your 6D into the store - either bring your tri-pod or borrow one from the store. Test the 50L in the store until you are happy. I like the piece of paper with lots of typed words on it sitting perpendicular to your camera. Use a marker or a pen and place a dark thick mark that you can easily focus on extending out, above and below, a letter in the middle of the page. Take a picture and then zoom all the way in to see if the camera / lens are hitting your spot focus mark. If it is front or rear focusing, MFA the lens until it is basically centered. While you are there, you may want to borrow another 6D from the store to see if the MFA was because of your camera or was it the lens. The type of light affects the MFA range so may want to do it in two locations in the store. If everything is reasonable buy it.

I am a good customer of the store where I buy all my stuff and I check every lens before buying it. It is so much easily in life to make sure things are working correct from day 1. If the store doesn't let you do this start walking and find a new store.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.
