I was suitably impressed. I didn't get the birds I was hoping for but some locals came to my aid and gave me something to test it out on. This was at 400mm and fairly heavily cropped. The combination of the 7DII and Big Tammy is leaps and bounds ahead of my experiences with my 7D, even after Big Tammy's FW update though I suspect much of that may be down to my particular copy of the 7D. Every lens I've got is spot on with the 7DII (after MFA) whereas my 7D was variable to say the least. ![]() Peter2516 wrote in post #17542999 Awesome ^^^. Exactly my thoughts! May 05, 2015 06:43 | #6761 Lester Wareham wrote in post #17540660 Bit off topic, but of those using the Tammy on an unlocked gimbal at lowish shutter speeds, how many turn on VR? Under test conditions I seem to get very good results down to very low speeds well below 1/250. Using it on small garden birds however at not particularly low speeds like 1/250 I seem to get much better results with VR on, the VR off was not very good. In all cases same methodology, shooting using the shutter button, sidekick and Kirk head pan movement unlocked. Exposure ISO 1600, f6.3, 1/250, 600mm, 7DI. It seems counterintuitive that controlled tests should be so much better with VR off than real world. Any experiences or thoughts? I turn on the VR for us on a monopod, but not on a tripod, no matter what head I'm using. Thanks for the reply. On a locked head I found it made no difference if the VR was on or off, I guess it autodetects. My Photography Home Page

I previously used the lens on the same legs and a locked ball head very successfully down to quite low shutter speeds with deer. Less tha 1/200 or even down to 1/50. It was more I was surprised that an unlocked gimbal didn't help me much in real life compared to tests. This might be poor techneque on my part. I guess an unlocked gimbal is more like a monopod so VR on seem indicated. How low a shutter speed can you get away with on an unlocked gimbal? I have no idea; I've never tested it that way.
