In posts #970 and 971 both Pondrader and CyberDyneSystems comment on the amount of dust being drawn into this lens. Is anyone else seeing this problem? I have put my potential purchase on hold as some of my trips are to very dusty parts of the world.

Ooh now I'm skerd. I'm thinking mine is very clean, but I'll have to watch for it. I haven't been shooting in dusty areas... yet.

I certainly wouldn't let it stop you form getting the lens. Dust happens.

My comment was merely in response to the years of people asking for the "MKII" to be rotating zoom as opposed to push pull, in the mistaken belief that this would reduce the dust that naturally gets pulled into a long zoom lens.

ie: Any long zoom that is not "internal zoom" will likely be subject to a certain amount of dust. How you use it will be the biggest factor. Avoiding one of these zooms will only mean getting dust in another.

Dust fear again!

Mine is fine, had it since December, but haven't used it in particularly dusty places. (Except in my house!)

1 more question about this lens, I was reading that at 400mm its not quite as long as the 400mm prime?

With the dust its not a huge concern but its worth asking.

..

I understand that it is about 383 at the long end (a number that's easy to remember because I was a Mopar fan)

In real world with a subject out at 40' or so, this difference equals about one step forward ( or about two feet) as compared to true 400mm.

Dust fear lol, Im referring to real dust, the kind you find on the inside of a really big " Dust Pump " I never thought of it being worse or better than a push pull, I was just hoping for better sealing around the barrel of the front element than previous models, I know my 70-300L has a far bit of particles built up over the last couple years. I was making a statement about the lack of dust control where the barrel moves in and out of the body. I would think moving air from one end of a body to the other as in a 70-200L would incure no dust migration.

Im generally on the pro side of thing's, I think I've been a full time supporter of both the 7DII and the 100-400L II from the start,....I learned the Camera and the lens and posted that!!

I just rented a copy from LensRentals.com for four days at the beginning of June for my trip to a Red Lodge and the Beartooth Pass in MT. Cannot wait!

Thanks for the replies on dust, very re-assuring. I didn't own the previous version so have no experience with a large zoom lens of this type.
