I did but didn't get anything good with it. I'm heading back again tonight and will try again.

The crowds are so heavy that VNP is limiting it to 50 cars at a time in the parking lot and they may enforce a time limit during the day. That's okay, the best show is after about 11pm when the clouds roll out! Seems like most of the significant lava activity has been between midnight and 3am or so. Headed back again tonight and I'll try again with the 50!

These images are from early this morning.

Top image was made with a 100-400mm IS I while the bottom image was made with the 17mm TS-E.

Absolutely stunning! I'm considering coming up this Friday if the lava lake is still high/visible.

The lava is rising in the Halema'uma'u Pit Crater in Kilauea Summit on the Big Island. You can now see the lava lake. The levels are the highest in the 8 years since the lava returned to the pit.

This image is from tonight.

Damn my timing sucks....We leave Hawaii and the activity starts afresh. Glad you were able to get to view it though.

Thanks guys. It really is amazing. When the lava is boiling you can hear it from our position of over a mile away.

I have a few hours of video and numerous images, plan on getting some more tonight or tomorrow.

Unless things change quickly (and you know how that goes) you should be good to go.

Plan on parking about a mile away and hiking in! During the peak hours the parking lot at Jagger is full and the rangers are not allowing cars into that lot. If it were me, I would get to Jagger around 3am which will give you the opportunity to shoot night time shots and then wait for the sun to come up and get the daytime images. You will not be restricted by the rangers within that time frame and can drive right up to Jagger. That or get there after 11pm and stay the night, which is what a few folks are doing.

Went to Halemaumau this past weekend. Went Friday night/Saturday morning (May 9, 2015) at 1 am. Jaggar Museum was pretty empty, but it was clouded in and rainy. Went Saturday night at around 11 pm. It was packed, but for about 20 minutes it was clear and no rain! What a sight both times!
