Didn't they always make AF lenses for Sony?

More precisely Cosina is making the lenses. They've been making Zeiss lenses in Japan for a long time now...

The Zeiss badged Sony lenses were manufactured by Sony...Sony merely licensed the optical design.

These were designed from the ground up directly by Zeiss. This is also the first optically stabilized lens from Zeiss.

I just hope they're full-featured, wide-aperture, pro-grade lenses in the same vein as existing Zeiss lenses, instead of sacrificing performance in the name of small size due to the size of current E-mount bodies.

Without high-performance lenses to go with it (and that includes f/1.4 aperture primes, f/2.8 zooms and fast supertelephotos) E-mount is doomed to remain the realm of budget buyers and Metabones-wielding, non-action-shooting Canon refugees.

When Sony released the massive, but optically fantastic, FE 35 1.4, it highlighted the fact that Sony is willing to make the no compromise high optical quality fast aperture glass that professionals and serious hobbyists demand. They knocked it out of the park with that lens, and its easily one of the best 35mm primes in the market. The 90mm macro is another example of this. It's only a matter of time before we see fast aperture zooms and more fast aperture primes.

The beauty of the e-mount is in its flexibility. Aside from the ability to adapt just about any lens under the sun, Sony and Zeiss have given us a pretty good mix of no compromise optically excellent lenses, and compact lenses. Many of their compact lenses are optically excellent as well. i.e., the FE 55 1.8 is among the best 50-ish primes out there, and when paired with an a7 body, is a much more compact than your typical DSLR set-up.

I'd like to see the Otus lenses released in E-mount with AF and weather sealing.

Between top-quality Zeiss glass and Sony sensors, you'd have a hard-to-beat lens lineup.

Of course, there would also need to be a wider range of lenses, e.g. 70-200 f/2.8, 14-24 f/2.8, TS-E lenses, etc.
