I have tickets to the Tuesday practice round for the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay G.C. I'd like to take my camera and see if I can get anything good. Never photographed golf before. I'm thinking of taking my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II as the primary lens. Camera bags are not allowed, so I'll be limited on what else I can take. I'm considering also renting a 24-70mm f/2.8 II. Chambers Bay is very scenic with the open layout, the sound, the lone fir, and the trains, so for that reason I think it might be worth lugging the extra lens. Plus I'm considering buying that lens, so this would be an opportunity to try it out first. What do you guys think? And how to carry the extra, will they let me have a lens pouch on my belt?

Other than that I plan on loading up the cargo pockets of my shorts with extra CF cards, spare batteries, lens wipes, etc. Any other tips or advice from you guys who have shot at practice rounds before? Would it be worth renting a 1.4x extender as well?

whether you need a 1.4 depends on where you are in relation to the golfers.

Personally I would think you would be better off, finding a location that can provide some cool shots. wait by a set of bunkers that players are likely to hit into. be on the pin side so you can get a face on shot as they hit out of the bunker. for something like this you can use the 70-200 without a 1.4 if you setup where you don't need one.

The thing to keep in mind is that NEVER press the shutter until the ball is struck, or you will find yourself in the parking lot.

The 70-200 also works well around the putting greens.

overall, stay low, stay still, and stay quiet.

have fun
