Just to demonstrate, 5DIII, 800mm L IS f5.6 with 1.4x TC III on monopod. One shot without flash.
The owls were about 40 feet away in the top of a large oak tree.

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

For strange reason, I can't get two images in one post. Whatever I load to image B will not show in the draft or after posting. This shot used a Metz flash and the Better Beamer extender. Still on a monopod. I find that the one eye lit and the other not gives the image a humorous look.

I have no explanation for how the second image produced two colors for the eyes. Or for why this one shows up, when I could not get a second one in the first post.

Breakfast snack for this heron... Captured at Bolsa Chica Reserve, here in SoCal... 7D2 + 400 2.8L II 'non-IS' + Canon 1.4x II and 2x II TC's (stacked)... ISO 1600, f/8 @ 1/2000sec... Cropped about 10% from the left and 5% from the bottom for framing purposes... Distance from the scene was roughly 80-90 feet away...

Awesome! How did the 7D2 deal with the stacked TC's? I realize it's "only" f/8...but did the 7D2 have any focusing issues or did it act as if it was any other f/8 lens?

I was pleasantly surprised that the aperture went down to f/5.6, even with stacked TC's... I guess the 1.4x TC didn't register in the EXIF, but it was mounted on with the 2x.. With regards to AF issues, I did not have a problem with any AF points; both in single and/or groups... All worked wonderfully with flying colors... Hope that helped in answering your questions, gocolts...

Perfect, thanks! Good to know as I have a 7D2 and am always looking at creative ways to get more reach.

First time out with these combos for Motorsport

300MM F2.8 IS II + 1.4x III 1DM4 F5.0 1/400sec 125ISO

300MM F2.8 IS II + 2x III 6D F5.6 1/500sec 160ISO

Very happy with both combos, and also that the 6D consistently nailed focus with the 2x in less than ideal light - very happy.

A coupla bodies and a few lenses

More great work, thanks for posting! That old 400 of yours is definitely a keeper. Unless you plan to start hand-holding it, I can see why you don't bother with an upgrade to an IS version.
