One from St. Joseph Michigan from January.

WOW! How do they manage to operate that light house when it's frozen in like that?

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

I don't really know the answer to this, but I am wondering/thinking with the lighthouse that frozen... Lake Michigan is just as frozen. How many ships/boats are going to be on the ice? Not too many unless it is the coast guard out there breaking up the ice in their special boats?

Here's another St. Joseph lighthouse ice photo for a sense of scale. The ice actually broke up between the piers long enough for me to get this shot with the light reflecting off the open water.

The two separate times I've been out to see this, the lake was most decidedly NOT frozen solid. It's more of a sea of massive chunks of ice floating around...the ones that I saw were anywhere from refrigerator to compact car sized.

The biggest danger though is the shelf ice that piles up on the shore...people assume it's solid, but there's moving water underneath, and if you fall into it, there's a good chance that you'll end up dead. :-/

Love this shot; I want to capture one like that with the light on!. That other photographer is taking a big risk walking past the first lighthouse in those conditions!

Thank you! I don't think he ended up going around to the outer side of the lighthouse. A couple (few?) years prior the ice buildup on the outer end of the pier was fairly flat and there were tons of people venturing out there (myself included). It was actually significantly more dangerous to get past the larger, inner lighthouse, as there are only a few feet on either side . The key is to make sure you have ice cleats strapped on to your boots...yak trax or similar.

Here's a photo of a canvas print of the photo I got a few years ago from the lighthouse pier itself...obviously the light was way more impressive that time. ;-)a

Then, on the other side of the island on privately owned land - Grand Island North Light Station. A bit harder to get what with the rocking boat, distance and lack of mega zoom:
