OK, so this might need to be in the flash section but I figured it was specific to just these two Nikon accessories to try here first :)
I am working on learning how to use my SB900 as a fill flash indoors and outdoors, now when I bought the flash second hand I purchased the hard plastic gels for teh SB910 (the green and amber ones).

I understand that the green one is for daylight temperature range lighting (like in my house I run pretty much only CFL's that are 5K and above temp) and the amber one is used for tungsten temperature range (most older houses, theater lighting etc.)

So when I am outdoors in bright sunlight or an area where I am trying to hard shadows or soften the shadows cast on subjects face should I go bare flash and just set my WB balance to daylight, expecting the flash to properly match the ambient? Or would using the Green hard gel mentioned above work fine?

I ask because i see many people state use 1/4 CTO and 1/2 CTO but have no idea what level strength these gels are...
