Challenge #537 - Fire

As usual, judging photos so close in quality makes for a challenging process in rating them. I spent a lot of time going back and forth between them all and finally just had to go with what grabbed me the most. Not a lot of margin between first and fourth place at all.

teekay - In the Night: very nice capture of the subtle lighting. A challenging shot that captured nice ambiance.

Spoco57 - Fire Feathers: Excellent capture of a firework I don't think I've ever seen before. Nicely done.

rpolitsr - New Year's Eve fires: Another very challenging shot. Beautiful flames and embers. And sharp to boot.

Jim Askew - Fire in the Sauce: Ah, one of my weaknesses. Having a somewhat large collection of my own, I can appreciate what you've done here. Fire indeed!

That was the easy part. As for how they lined up (IMO):

1st place: rpolitsr - New Year's Eve fires
2nd place: Spoco57 - Fire Feathers
3rd place: teekay - In the Night
An oh so close honorable mention: Jim - Fire in the Sauce

Thank you all for submitting awesome photos.
Take it away, Rafael.

Two weeks ago the theme was water. This last week it was wind. How can I not carry this on with either earth or fire elements.
So fire it is. Have fun :-)

Nice fiery shots, Rafael and Spoco - congratulations!

Not a good week for taking fire shots here. Amid a heat wave and with a ban on all open fires due to forest fire hazard, all I could think of was a candle.:-(

Congratulations to all for the great entries and thank you Raven for the first place.
I was not expecting to win with this picture. In fact, I was sad when I realized that my 'perfect shot' for this challenge was not from my Pro1. Nevertheless, I will share it with you: a grandniece of mine that inherited her fiery hair from her grand-grand-father, husband of my aunt. I shot it with my XT in the 100 birthday party of her grand-grand-mother two years ago.

I will post the new challenge soon. I'm tempted to use the fourth element discarded by Raven. :)

Wonderful entries from everyone & sorry I did not play. I tried to get some fire shots in the house because it is 104 outside (where the true fire is). But I cannot get the dang camera to lock a focus point!
So my feeble attempts at a flame went bust.

Congrats to all! Thanks for the sweet spot, Raven. I really enjoyed the hot-sauce take on fire, Jim.

I've gotten some mileage out of the hand-held fireworks scene mode on the G1X. This was Labor Day 2014. The trick is holding steady and aiming in the right direction. This particular firework was not quite as spectacular in real life.... a shower of gold glitters, but the open shutter makes it look beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised at the shots I got. I'll probably pull a few more out if the challenge topic allows!

Thanks for doing the work, Raven.

Steve

A beautiful shot Rafael - thanks for sharing.:-)

It's always frustrating when one has a winner like that on file but taken with the "wrong" camera for a competition. I've got shots taken with my old A95 and early SX models that are better than most taken with my 60D. I've often considered starting a new weekly challenge in he "Competitions" forum with the same successful G-series rules but open to ANY Canon digital camera, but never got around to it - yet!
