My first stop is usually:/birds/index.html (external link)
already mentioned by cedric_g

But I also browse through this site especially when I want to find pictures of juveniles or look for different angles of view in shots when trying to find details in feather patterns or colours: …rds?sortorder=common-name (external link)

There is a new site from Cornell University where you can upload a photo and the site will evaluate against a large database of birds to give you an ID:
http://merlin.allabout (external link)

At this time, it only supports birds in North America/Canada, but will (hopefully) grow to support other regions.
